Marcus Rashford’s camp are reportedly mulling over the possibility of seeking legal action against Manchester United after his banishment from Rúben Amorim’s squad.
Marcus Rashford is one of five Manchester United players expected to leave the club this summer, after new manager Rúben Amorim deemed him surplus to requirements.
The second week of pre-season training is underway, with new signings Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon continuing to settle into their new environment and build chemistry with their teammates.
However, Rashford, along with Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho, has been told to stay away from first-team training while they explore potential moves away from the club. They have been given permission to use the facilities for individual training sessions after 5 pm.
Despite scoring Amorim’s first goal as United manager and netting twice more against Everton, Rashford’s relationship with the Portuguese coach quickly deteriorated, with Amorim reportedly unimpressed by his attitude in training.
After a productive loan spell at Aston Villa, where he scored four goals and provided six assists in 17 appearances, Rashford is now said to be pushing for a transfer to Barcelona.
Rashford’s camp considering legal action
The decision to axe the above five players from training has been a controversial one, as while Amorim wants no distractions in his squad during pre-season training, many have pointed out that, with United needing funds for the summer, this devalues the players who are set to be sold.
Although United have offered the players the use of their facilities in the evenings, a new report from the Spanish outlet Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, suggests that the situation between Rashford’s camp and United is becoming increasingly tense.
Sport insists that those within Rashford’s camp have considered whether Amorim’s decision to banish him from the first-team squad violates his rights as a footballer, which could lead them to sue United to have his contract terminated and the rest of his wages paid in full.
With just under three seasons left on his £300,000-a-week salary, as per Capology, this would equal a payout of just over £45 million from the club in wages and tax.
Legal action is unlikely, but Rashford’s future must be sorted soon
Despite Sport’s report, Rashford’s camp taking legal action against United seems unlikely, considering the player is determined to leave his boyhood club on amicable terms.
“When I leave, it’s going to be ‘no hard feelings’. If I know that a situation is already bad, I’m not going to make it worse,” Rashford commented in December 2024.
However, it is imperative that United sort out Rashford’s future as soon as possible. With pre-season now underway and around six weeks left in the transfer window, his wages must be moved off the books, hopefully with a permanent fee accompanying the move.
United are reportedly demanding around £40 million for the England international. However, Barcelona, his preferred choice, are attempting to secure the player on loan with either an option or obligation to buy.
After missing out on Nico Williams and it being unlikely that Liverpool will let go of Luis Diaz, Rashford is now Barcelona’s top choice for the left-wing position.
