Rene Meulensteen makes bold goalscoring prediction for Matheus Cunha ahead of debut Man Utd campaign

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has made a very strong prediction for Matheus Cunha ahead of his debut campaign for the Red Devils.

Manchester United’s first target ahead of the summer transfer window was to acquire the services of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ruben Amorim’s side were successful in their attempt as they were able to trigger a £62.5 million release clause for the 26-year-old Brazilian within a matter of weeks of the window opening.

This priority signing came due to Amorim’s side being so poor in front of goal last campaign, only scoring 44 goals in 38 Premier League games. Cunha alone scored 15 in the league last season.

It seems likely that the 1999-born Brazilian will take the left-sided 10 spot, replacing the want-away Alejandro Garnacho. Former United coach Rene Meulensteen has predicted how well Cunha will do.

Meulensteen’s Cunha prediction

Meulensteen, who was very important during his 12-year tenure at United, spoke to Grosvenor Casino about Cunha, and how well he will do in his first campaign for the club.

The Dutchman said, “I think Matheus Cunha will score around 15 goals again next season. In normal circumstances, he should be the perfect player for Manchester United.

“He has energy, skill and is a goal threat, which suggests he should score 20 goals, he will get more opportunities that he did at Wolves, the problem is that it wasn’t the case last season.”

Finally, Meulensteen stated, “He is a top-draw player without a doubt, but it’s about the team.”

United’s improving goal threat

After such a tumultuous campaign, Amorim will be desperate that his first full season as the United coach will be a drastic improvement from last campaign.

With no European competitions to feature in, United can focus predominantly on the league, and have much improved firepower in order to do so.

The 15-goal Cunha will be joined in the Red Devils’ attack by Bryan Mbeumo, who himself managed to score an impressive 20 league goals last season.

As it is now being reported that United are still after a new striker to complete this fresh-faced front three, fans of the club can surely be optimistic of a far more inspiring forward line in the 2025/26 campaign.
