Rúben Amorim has explained a second trait that he likes about his new striker Benjamin Šeško after scoring his second goal for the club in the 2-0 win over Sunderland.
Rúben Amorim handed Senne Lammens his first appearance in goal as Manchester United welcomed Sunderland to a rain-soaked Old Trafford for their Premier League clash.
United began on the front foot and quickly took control of proceedings. The early pressure paid off when Mason Mount produced a clever touch and precise finish to open the scoring. Amorim’s side continued to dominate possession, though Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs made several impressive stops to keep his team within reach.
Just after the half-hour mark, Benjamin Šeško extended United’s lead with a close-range effort. Sunderland believed they had been awarded a penalty shortly before the interval, but the decision was overturned after an on-field review.
The second half was more evenly contested, with both sides fighting for control. Amorim turned to Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Matheus Cunha to inject fresh energy down United’s left flank. Despite sustained pressure, a third goal proved elusive.
Resolute defending from Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw, combined with a confident late save from debutant Lammens, ensured United recorded their first clean sheet of the season and collected three valuable Premier League points.
Benjamin Šeško has a great additional trait
Speaking after the game, Amorim spoke about Šeško’s performances at the club and highlighted a trait that the Slovenian striker possesses, which is a great benefit for the side.
He said: “He has time, he’s going to stay here for a lot of years. The media puts a lot of pressure on the goals for the striker, but for me, it’s the effort that is the most important thing.
“Every time we kick the ball, he’s fighting for it; that’s massive for us. To win the second ball and give us time to breathe. I’m really happy with that.
“It’s frustrating not to have this kind of performance again. We need to do this kind of performance away as well – it’s our responsibility to play like this.”
Positive start to life at Old Trafford for Šeško
When Šeško’s signing was announced, it was easy to notice the comparisons between the Slovenian and Rasmus Højlund, who failed to live up to expectations in his two-season stint at Old Trafford, leaving to join Napoli on loan with a £38 million obligation to buy.
Both young strikers were brought in for sizeable fees, and were both rated as promising up-and-coming forwards before making the switch to United.
While praising a player’s effort is always a good thing, at the end of the day, a No.9 is always going to be judged by the goals he scores, and in that way, the Slovenian forward differs from Højlund.
It took the Danish striker until Boxing Day 2023 to score his first Premier League goal for United, in his 15th league appearance for the club.
Following his first goal, the former United forward went on to score six goals in his next five games, a feat the Slovenian will aim to replicate after league action resumes following the international break.
