“Real problem…” – Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer completely agree on damning Manchester United progress stance

After Sunday’s stalemate between Manchester United and Manchester City, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have both agreed whether Amorim has progressed United or not.

Following an unenthusiastic 0-0 between the fierce Mancunian rivals, there have been many claims made as to whether Ruben Amorim is the right man to take Manchester United back to the top.

Amorim hasn’t been able to silence his critics since his arrival back in November, as many have questioned whether his unique system is the right fit for The Red Devils.

Although United have had spells of unbeaten streaks under the 40-year-old, two goalless performances against Manchester City and Nottingham Forest have raised further questions.

This weekends result has led to ex-Premier League stars Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer discussing the stale affair on their The Rest is Football podcast, where they both agree about Amorim’s progress.

Lineker and Shearer agree on lack of progress at United

After describing the Manchester derby as ‘one of the worst derbies’ he had ever seen, Shearer stated, “It’s actually getting worse under Amorim. They look disjointed and they don’t seem to have a clear identity.”

Lineker then went on to say that, It’s a real problem. The team is just not clicking. He’s so focused on his system, but they don’t have the players to execute it effectively. The squad is not suited to play the way he wants.”

Since Amorim’s arrival, his side have failed to improve their consistency in the Premier League and remain in the bottom half of the table.

Also, United have only scored 25 goals from 20 league matches in this time, leaving them as the 15th highest scorers with 37 goals overall.

Luckhurst’s opposing view due to City ‘moment’

Contrary to The Rest is Football podcast, chief Manchester United writer Samuel Luckhurst claims that United are improving under Amorim, singling out one specific moment as proof.

Luckhurst claims that United’s build up is ‘more polished‘, and noted the moment when Alejandro Garnacho collaborated with left back Patrick Dorgu to provide a chance for Joshua Zirkzee in the second half.

A full quote from Luckhurst stated, “Amorim pointed at Garnacho when Dorgu had the ball. Garnacho got it, gave it back to Dorgu and he crossed cleanly for Zirkzee. If the ball was beyond Ederson’s reach then that would have been the perfect showreel for Amorim’s United.”

This individual moment during Sunday’s uninspiring contest has been seen as a good sign for the future, despite the fact it was United’s 12th game without a goal this season.

Amorim will be hoping that his side can put their goalscoring woes behind them soon enough, as they now look forward to their tricky Europa League clash with Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday.
