Erik ten Hag has opened up on his summary of the 2022/23 season ahead of the FA Cup final on Saturday afternoon.

During Erik ten Hag‘s first season as Manchester United manager, there have been plenty of ups and downs.

From winning trophies against Newcastle United to losing against fierce rivals Manchester City and Liverpool in tragic defeats away from home, fans have had a real rollercoaster ride.

United have the chance to win their second trophy of the season as they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday afternoon at Wembley Stadium.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the FA Cup final, Erik ten Hag has detailed to the media his thoughts on the final, explaining that although the fixture does have importance, it is not season-defining.

“Of course, [the final] is a test but you can’t set conclusions on the basis of one game,” he said on Friday afternoon. “Therefore, you need more. Already we make that evaluation and I make my conclusions. But, nevertheless, it is a good test on Saturday.

“We want to win a cup, it is not about stopping them, it is about us winning the cup, it is a great opportunity. It is great that we deserve that opportunity to be in a cup final and meet Man City, it is a great opportunity and we fought so hard for it. We progressed so well that we are in the FA Cup final.”

When questioned on if he compares his club’s success to that of Manchester City, he was quick to point out that he looks at the progress United have made in the last 12 months.

“Of course, I look at our opponents, I evaluate, but we look to ourselves and you have to see where you are as a club and from there on, you have to make progress and I think we did over the last season, we made very good progress, we are in a good direction and now we have the opportunity in the summer to make new targets, new goals in the short-term.

“But the longer term will stay the same. As I said last year, we want to restore Man United but we have a way to go.”

“I think it is very good when you see where we came from and then you see the progress and the development of the team. And in a tough league like the Premier League, you are third and winning the League Cup and in the final of the FA Cup, you can be happy with the season.

“But after the summer, we start again and we start on zero.”
