Rasmus Højlund has sent former teammate Benjamin Šeško a positive message following the Manchester United striker’s goal against Sunderland.
Manchester United head into the international break on a high after Rúben Amorim’s side earned a comfortable 2–0 win over Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.
United made a bright start and quickly took control, with Mason Mount breaking the deadlock through a clever touch and composed finish. The hosts continued to dominate possession, though Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced several superb stops to prevent further damage.
Benjamin Šeško doubled the advantage just before the half-hour mark with a close-range strike, and while Sunderland thought they’d won a penalty before the interval, the decision was overturned after an on-field review.
After the break, both sides competed for control of the game. Amorim introduced Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Matheus Cunha to inject fresh energy on the left flank, and although United continued to press forward, a third goal never arrived.
Even so, solid defensive work from Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw, combined with a confident late save from debutant Senne Lammens, secured United’s first clean sheet of the season and another vital three points in the Premier League.
Højlund full of praise for Šeško’s goal
Šeško’s finish against Sunderland was his first goal for the club at Old Trafford, with many joyed to see that the 22-year-old has now scored in back-to-back Premier League fixtures for the Reds.
One such person is Rasmus Højlund, who is currently on loan from United at Napoli. Šeško was drafted in as Højlund’s replacement after the latter failed to perform consistently at United, but that has not stopped the Dane from celebrating his fellow striker’s goal.
After the game, Šeško took to Instagram to celebrate his first goal for United at their home ground. “What a feeling!” the Slovenian wrote. “A goal at the Stretford End and three points to go with it. Let’s build on this. Hungry for more!”
In response, Højlund praised the player he had trained with for a few weeks, replying: “Congrats my friend,” accompanied by a double raised hands emoji.
While the actions of some players who left in the summer, such as Jadon Sancho and Antony, were viewed unfavourably by those surrounding United, Højlund was a model professional.
Although he is now expected to join Napoli permanently next summer despite not initially wanting to leave United even after Šeško arrived, his openness in praising United’s new No. 30 speaks volumes about his fantastic character and love for the club.
Šeško dreamed of scoring at Old Trafford
Earlier in the summer, Šeško’s agent spoke openly about how the striker’s eventual move to Old Trafford was one that was years in the making.
Šeško had been a target for United long before his professional career began, but he initially opted against the move, as he wanted to develop his game elsewhere before joining the Premier League.
Speaking after the game, the 22-year-old admitted that scoring at Old Trafford is a moment he had dreamed about ever since childhood.
“This has been the moment I’ve dreamed about as a kid, because the atmosphere here is unbelievable,” he said. |Not just after the goal, but after every tackle as well. It’s a dream come true, I’m happy we won.”
With goals both home and away now under his belt, Amorim and the United faithful will be hoping the Slovenian can kick on and start notching goals regularly.
