Rasmus Højlund reveals true thoughts on Viktor Gyökeres comparisons with defiant six-word message
Rasmus Højlund has responded to comparisons between himself and Viktor Gyökeres following his Manchester United brace on Thursday evening.
Rúben Amorim marked his first victory as Manchester United‘s head coach with a dramatic 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday night.
In his Old Trafford debut, Amorim’s side burst into action immediately, with Alejandro Garnacho finding the net in the opening minute thanks to relentless pressing from Rasmus Højlund.
Bodo/Glimt responded swiftly, turning the game on its head with two goals by the 25th minute. However, United struck back just before half-time as Højlund showed exceptional control and composure to equalise.
The second half saw United take the lead once more, with Højlund doubling his tally after a slick team move involving Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte, whose pinpoint assist set up the decisive goal.
Despite intense pressure from the visitors in the closing stages, André Onana delivered a series of stunning saves to secure Amorim’s maiden victory and United’s second Europa League win of the campaign.
Højlund’s comparisons
Since Amorim arrived, many have compared Højlund to Amorim’s striker at Sporting, Viktor Gyökeres, who was the pinnacle of the coach’s system in Portugal.
Both strikers possess pace, strength, and a finishing touch, with the comparisons going further to the fact they are both tall, blonde, and Scandinavian.
When asked if he felt he could fulfil the same role as the 26-year-old Swede, Højlund expressed his confidence that he had what it took with a six-word message: “I’m still not the finished article.”
He was quoted as saying: “I think I showed last season with being top scorer for the team that I can score my goals.
“I’m still very young but obviously I would like to take the responsibility and that’s why I also took the number nine this year because I think I want to take the next level and the next step.
“But yeah, I still have a lot to grow. I’m still not the finished article. I’m only 21.”
Amorim’s advice
Speaking to the press after the game, Amorim was impressed with Højlund’s performance but has advised the striker to take fewer touches with the ball at his feet.
“I think he improved the connection,” Amorim said. “I think he has to improve more because sometimes he gives too many touches when he holds the ball.
“But he’s really important for us because when we are in the low block he is the guy to hold the ball, to connect for transitions, he did that very well, he has that characteristic, he was aggressive in the goals, he was aggressive in the box and he is a quality player.
“I think he scores the most difficult goals so he has a lot to improve. Is the same for every player but he did a great job today.”
