Rasmus Højlund has agreed with Leny Yoro when asked to pick who is the most underrated player at Manchester United under Rúben Amorim.

Rúben Amorim’s first two and a half months at Manchester United have been anything but smooth since taking over from Erik ten Hag.

Appointed in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and winning just once in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to stabilise and rebuild a club in turmoil.

There have been promising signs, including impressive away victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency remains an issue. Under Amorim, United have won 10 of their first 20 matches, losing eight and drawing two.

Off the pitch, the challenges have been just as demanding. Three senior attackers left on loan during the winter transfer window without replacements arriving, while Lisandro Martínez faces the prospect of missing the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

However, there have been some positives. United finally strengthened at left wing-back with the signing of Patrick Dorgu, while 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven has arrived as a promising option for the future.

Højlund names United’s most underrated player

While some players have struggled since Amorim took charge of the squad, there are others who have really come into their own within the 40-year-old’s new system.

While Amad is the clear choice, United’s No. 9 Rasmus Højlund reckons that another player who has been a big positive is Manuel Ugarte, who he believes is the most underrated player at United.

“I think you’ve seen it a little bit more now with the new manager coming in, how well he’s been doing,” Højlund told Sky Sports when asked to name the most underrated player at United. “Obviously, the results have not been good enough, but he’s [Ugarte] been a standout player lately.

“You see his quality, you see those workhorses in teams, they don’t get the appreciation. For example, Amad has been doing amazing recently and he’s starting to get his recognition.

“But Manu has also been very, very good. You’re starting to see now that he’s performing on another level.”

What Yoro said about Ugarte of late

In a recent conversation with club legend Rio Ferdinand, 19-year-old centre-back Leny Yoro also had only positive words to say about the Uruguayan international, explaining he feels Ugarte is a vital type of player to have in midfield.

When speaking with Yoro, Ferdinand said: “I look at things from your position because obviously I was a defender, so I look and think that Ugarte in front of you, the amount of tackles this guy makes and the amount of ground he covers, I think I would’ve enjoyed to play behind this guy, he does a lot of work.”

Yoro agreed with the 46-year-old’s words, replying: “Yeah, this guy is recovering every ball in front of you, so of course that is really good to play with players like this.”

However, there have been some complaints of late that Ugarte needs to become better on the ball. He has been brilliant when sweeping up play and breaking down opposition attacks, but with Amorim looking to dominate in possession, he must improve this part of his game.
