“Guilty…” Rasmus Højlund reacts to Denmark’s Euro 2024 exit with emotional message
Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund has sent an emotional message to Denmark fans following their exit from the 2024 European Championships.
Denmark had a mixed campaign during the 2024 European Championships as although they finished second in their group and advanced to the round of 16, they did not win a single fixture.
Manchester United duo Rasmus Højlund and Christian Eriksen started all four of their games, and the latter impressed many with a goal and two Player of the Match awards.

Denmark kicked off their campaign with back-to-back 1-1 draws with Slovenia and England before securing their second-placed spot in Group C with a 0-0 draw against Serbia.
They then faced hosts Germany in the round of 16, where goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala saw the superior side win 2-0 on the night, knocking Denmark out of the competition.
Rasmus Højlund drew some criticism for not scoring during those four games, and following the exit, he sent out a heart-felt message to Danish fans explaining his mixed emotions.
“To be honest I didn’t really know what to expect from my first Euros,” he wrote on Instagram following the result. “Supporting Denmark during a tournament was always one of the highlights as a Dane, playing for Denmark was indescribable.
“I was so eager, and wanted so badly to make our country proud. I texted one of my friends that I felt a bit guilty. It’s a weird sentimental mix, because there’s also pride.
“Obviously we wanted to bring the cup home, but the thing that will always bring me pride, both as a footballer and a Dane: Vi er røde, vi er hvide. Vi står sammen, side om side.”
The final line in his message translates to “we are red we are white. We stand together, side by side“, which is a beautiful sentiment.
Højlund will now enjoy three weeks’ holiday before he returns to Manchester United’s pre-season training in July for his second campaign as a Red Devil. He may return in time to join United on their pre-season tour of the USA, with the first fixture against Arsenal not kicking off until 27 July.
