Marcus Rashford sings praises of two Manchester United players following Real Betis victory
Manchester United bounced back from their heavy defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool in fine fashion, shipping four past Spanish outfit Real Betis.
Erik ten Hag was eager to get the Manchester United train back on track with an emphatic win in Europe, and an early goal from Marcus Rashford calmed the nerves of the United camp.
Despite an equaliser from Ayoze Perez, Antony and Bruno Fernandes then joined the party in the second half, when the Brazilian produced a trademark left-footed finish past Claudio Bravo and the skipper headed home to extend the home side’s lead.
Wout Weghorst finished Real Betis off with his first goal in front of an Old Trafford crowd and married up his goal with a heart-warming celebration.
The in-form Rashford commented on the performance in a post-match interview with BT Sport.
“It’s a step in the right direction. We have to build on this now to gain momentum,” the frontman said.
“We can’t put too much emphasis on Sunday because it is gone, we can’t change it. We have to look forward now to the next games.”
Two players, in particular, were at the forefront of Rashford’s praise, as he singled out captain Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst.
Old Trafford was in good spirits despite the disappointment that unfolded at Anfield on the weekend, with the home crowd bellowing ‘Bruno, Bruno, Bruno!’ throughout.
Bruno produced the perfect response to the criticism, and Rashford praised United’s man with the armband: “Bruno was excellent again today. Good goal and [his] overall performance [was] very good, everyone is pleased for him.”
The compliments also flew Weghorst’s way after the target man bagged his first United goal on home soil.
“He does a tremendous job for the team, we all know that, but it’s the goals that are going to keep him happy and keep him working hard.
“I’m really pleased for him today and hopefully he gets some more.”

United now enter the second leg with a three-goal cushion against Real Betis, but Rashford was sure to echo that the tie is far from over and Manchester United will have to be at their best again to progress.
“It’s football,” he said.
“Anything can happen. We have to go there with the right mentality and get the job done; we’ve put ourselves in a good position in the tie, but it’s not finished yet.”
United showed true character to resurrect after a humbling defeat to the now-fifth-placed Liverpool and ten Hag and his team will be more than pleased with the performance.
