Manchester United are eyeing a 2025 transfer target for Rúben Amorim that was put into their system by Ralf Rangnick in 2021.

Manchester United are mapping out their 2025 transfer plans under the stewardship of new head coach Rúben Amorim.

Amorim took over from Erik ten Hag, who left with United struggling in 14th place in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League, despite a summer spend of more than £200 million.

With a tighter budget in place, the focus will be on Amorim developing the current squad.

Although January arrivals are improbable, the club are laying the groundwork for summer signings, with multiple departures expected to create room and funds for new additions.

Rangnick’s recommendation

Reports from Monday stated that Manchester United are monitoring Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha ahead of the 2025 summer window.

With reports stating that United want a new frontman in the summer after their goalscoring woes across the last campaign, they are scouring their database for a player in the market who suits their style.

Having landed on 25-year-old Cunha, this was a player that former interim manager Ralf Rangnick first altered the club to when he was in charge at Old Trafford in 2021.

Rangnick is known to have previously praised Cunha for being a ‘highly interesting’ player while praising his ‘speed and offensive drive’.

Although United’s initial links to Cunha started just after Rangnick left, there is little doubt that the Brazilian international was mentioned by the German during his time at Old Trafford.

Rangnick and Cunha’s history

The pair worked together when Rangnick signed Cunha for RB Leipzig in 2018, bringing him from Swiss side Sion.

Rangnick explained that he believed Cunha had the perfect capabilities to fit into the Leipzig side, although he only scored nine goals in 52 appearances.

However, he has been smashing life with Wolves this season, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in his opening 12 Premier League games.

Reports from 2023 state that Wolves have a £60 million price tag on the forward, and with his fantastic form, this valuation is unlikely to have dropped as his contract does not expire until 2027 at the earliest.
