Andy Mitten has backed Rio Ferdinand’s claim regarding a ‘world-class’ Manchester United player. He was heavily impressive against Chelsea.
After a slow start to the Premier League season, Manchester United were desperate for a change in fortune, and their 2-1 victory over Chelsea could be just what they needed to lift their spirits.
Ruben Amorim’s side currently sits 11th in the league, winning two of their first five games against Burnley and the aforementioned London side.
Having already faced Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, the Reds can be excited that some slightly kinder fixtures are on the horizon, which present them with a fantastic chance to put some points on the board.
In these early fixtures, one star has impressed a multitude of pundits with his imperious defensive displays, and is even being touted as a future leader of the club.
De Ligt’s ‘world-class’ level
Despite all the noise surrounding United’s goalkeeping conundrum and their central midfield dilemma, Matthijs De Ligt has consistently impressed with his ‘world-class levels’, according to Andy Mitten, via United In Focus.
Mitten said on The Talk of the Devils podcast that De Ligt is on his way to becoming a leader at the club, and is doing a great job of proving people wrong.
He said: “He’s been Man Utd’s best and most consistent player. I was surprised he wasn’t in the leadership group. He had a so-so first season.
“We’re now seeing the real De Ligt. He can absolutely become a leader. I’ve not seen him have a bad game this season.”
Ferdinand supports Mitten’s praise
If there is anyone who knows what it takes to be an imperious, leading centre-back at Old Trafford, it is Rio Ferdinand, and he himself has also started to sing the praises of United’s Dutch defender.
Ferdinand said, via UtdDistrict, “I think he’s been magnificent this season. Solid in all departments and I think he’s put himself in place to be probably the first name on the teamsheet.
“If we go by [Leny] Yoro being sub at the weekend and you think, okay, it probably looks like De Ligt is the number one choice defender in the team from the manager’s point of view.
“I think he’s been he’s been so sound and the fact he’s been keeping Harry Maguire out of the team says everything.”
With Maguire potentially out of contract next summer, De Ligt’s emergence as a defensive rock will be much appreciated at the club, and it has come at the ideal time.
