Having not featured much so far this season, one Manchester United star could leave the club this January, with Premier League clubs interested in signing him.
Manchester United strengthened Rúben Amorim’s squad over the summer with several key first-team additions.
The club’s primary objective in the transfer window was clear: to solve last season’s goalscoring struggles. After netting just 44 times in the previous Premier League campaign, United invested a total of £214 million to overhaul their front line completely.
Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha arrived to spearhead the new attack, while Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Højlund, Antony, and Jadon Sancho all departed Old Trafford.
One forward who did remain, however, is Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutchman showed promise during the latter stages of last season before an injury halted his progress, and he will now look to play a key role under Amorim.
January exit for Zirkzee a real possibility
The Netherlands international, who has been described as ‘fantastic’, scored just seven goals last season and has only been able to pick up 78 minutes so far this campaign, partially owing to injury.
As reported by TEAMtalk, Zirkzee will consider staying in the Premier League when weighing up his next move after struggling to establish himself as a regular starter at Man Utd.
Having previously been reported with Serie A side Como, Premier League sides Everton and West Ham have emerged as clubs that are interested in potentially making a move for the 24-year-old.
The outlet also reports that the player is seriously considering his future options after not featuring in United’s 2-0 win against Sunderland, and both loan and permanent deals are likely to be considered in the January window.
United should keep Zirkzee
The outlet also reported that Zirkzee was expected to leave the club during the summer, but was handed a late lifeline at United. Despite this, Šeško’s signing has limited his minutes so far this season.
Despite this, United’s lack of back-up strikers should make it clear to the club that Zirkzee needs to stay at the club until at least next summer, where they could then sign another striker should they deem it necessary.
One great trait that the Dutch forward offers is his versatility across the front line. Despite initially being signed as an out-and-out striker, his performances took an upturn last season when he played slightly deeper as a No.10.
The midfield has evidently been a position that requires addressing immediately, and United should focus all their efforts in the January window on signing a new central midfielder before considering any other position.
