One Manchester United star may need to watch out for his yellow card collection as the Premier League confirm the match officials for their fixture against Brighton.
Fresh off a superb 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, Manchester United return to Old Trafford for what promises to be a fierce contest against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Rúben Amorim’s season has been underwhelming so far, with disappointing defeats to Brentford and Grimsby Town raising serious doubts about his long-term position at the club.
However, the victory at Anfield was United’s second straight league win — Amorim’s first such run since taking charge — and their first triumph there in almost ten years, restoring a sense of optimism around Old Trafford.
That said, Brighton have often proven a tough opponent for United, and Amorim will be desperate to exact revenge after Fabian Hürzler’s side beat his team 3-1 at the same venue last season.
Premier League confirm United vs Brighton referee
Anthony Taylor (pictured above) will be the referee on Sunday afternoon in Manchester. Taylor officiated 31 Premier League fixtures last season, ten in UEFA matches, and three in the FIFA Club World Cup, among others.
Taylor officiated United five times last season, including Amorim’s first game in charge of United – a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town. He has also already officiated in a United match this campaign, the 3-0 loss against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Last season, Taylor issued 92 yellow cards in the Premier League and 174 across all competitions. He issued 12 red cards last season, seven via two yellow cards and five straight. He has awarded 14 penalties, nine of which came in the Premier League.
During the game, Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will serve as Taylor’s assistant referees. Gavin Ward will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Hürzler.
Neil Davies has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Rob Jones will act as assistant VAR.
United yellow cards so far this season
United have already seen one player suspended this season, with Casemiro’s red card against Chelsea leading to the Brazilian being banned for the 3-1 loss against Brentford.
The 33-year-old received two yellow cards against Chelsea, and despite these not being counted toward his yellow card tally so far this season, he still has a further three to his name. If he receives two more before the turn of the year, Casemiro will be suspended for an additional game.
While United have no other players who have received red cards across the Premier League and Carabao Cup, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Bruno Fernandes have both received two apiece, which may be worth keeping an eye on.
Amad also has one yellow to his name. However, no other United player has received a yellow or red card, suggesting a generally well-disciplined United side so far this campaign.
