Premier League confirm Manchester United referee vs Tottenham as rare official selected

The Premier League have confirmed who will be officiating Manchester United’s trip to face Tottenham Hotspur in North London on Saturday afternoon.

Rúben Amorim’s men head to North London on Saturday afternoon to face Tottenham Hotspur, looking to extend their unbeaten run to five Premier League matches.

Manchester United’s recent form has been impressive, with victories over Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton, as well as a draw against Nottingham Forest. Since their 3-0 loss to Manchester City in mid-September, the Reds have suffered defeat just once.

Tottenham, under Thomas Frank, are level on points with United but have endured a poor run at home this season. They’ve won only one of their five home fixtures — a 3-0 victory over Burnley — and were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in their most recent outing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The two clubs met four times last season, including in the Europa League final, with Spurs winning on every occasion. Amorim’s side will be eager to turn the tables when they make the trip to London this weekend.

Premier League confirm United referee vs Tottenham

Sam Barrott (pictured above) will be the referee on Saturday afternoon in North London. Barrott officiated 23 Premier League fixtures last season, three international matches, and four other English domestic fixtures.

Barrott only officiated United twice last season, in a 2-1 win over Brentford and a 2-0 loss against Arsenal, and has refereed the club once this season, in a 3-2 victory over Burnley, making his control of a United game a reasonably rare occurrence.

Last season, Barrott issued 107 yellow cards in the Premier League and 144 across all competitions. He issued just one red card last season, via two yellow cards. He awarded nine penalties, five of which came in the Premier League.

During the game, Tim Wood and Nick Greenhalgh will serve as Barrott’s assistant referees. Rob Jones will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Frank.

John Brooks has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Tony Harrington will act as assistant VAR.

A statement fixture for Amorim

The four-match unbeaten run in the Premier League is a welcome rarity for Amorim, with his United not usually a side who can string together a few wins and draws in domestic competition.

Beating Liverpool away from home and demolishing Brighton while not losing against Forest are three results that, last season, would have been almost impossible. Against Tottenham, Amorim has another chance to banish familiar demons.

United lost four times against Tottenham last season, conceding nine goals in the process, including the only goal in the Europa League final last May.

If United can defeat Tottenham and make it four wins from their last five games, this would go yet another step in proving that Amorim could finally be turning a corner at Old Trafford.
