Premier League boss admits Man Utd target is “a different level”, he could join Matheus Cunha under Ruben Amorim

Manchester United’s 2025 summer transfer window is shaping up to be one of their most explosive in a long time.

After finishing the 2024/25 season 15th in the Premier League table and having lost against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, Manchester United knew they needed to make some changes.

Having already traded Erik ten Hag for Rúben Amorim in the managerial slot, the club have embarked on an ambitious plot to completely reshape their squad at Old Trafford.

Matheus Cunha’s £62.5 million arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers was confirmed on the opening day of the window, with the club also chasing Bryan Mbeumo and a new striker.

Amorim is also wanting to sign a new midfielder, with a possible goalkeeper and centre-back added to the equation if funds allow.

However, to raise a significant budget, the club are preparing the sales of many high-profile players such as Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony.

Wolves’ Pereira full of praise for Gyökeres

With United eyeing fresh attacking talent, the club have Viktor Gyökeres as a key name on their striker target list – but with the player having a price tag of around £60 million, he would very much be a premium signing.

Gyökeres scored a stunning 66 goals in 68 games under Amorim at Sporting CP, and has needed 97 in his 102 appearances for the Portuguese side.

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Vitor Pereira was recently interviewed by the Portuguese outlet Record, where he was asked what Liga Portugal player he would sign if he had a blank cheque.

“I won’t say, but the name came straight to my mind,” The 56-year-old coyly replied in response.

When outright asked if it’s Gyökeres, Pereira stated: “Oh Gyökeres… I can’t even think about that anymore, he’s on a different level.

“But there are several players in Portugal that I would come [to get] all the time. Although Portugal is already selling for a high price. Wolverhampton has to look for clubs that aren’t the big ones, because it’s already very difficult to hire at the big ones.”

Gyökeres would complete United’s new-look front three

With Cunha already signed from Pereira’s Wolves and United reportedly confident that a deal with Brentford for Mbeumo will be finalised, bringing in Gyökeres would complete United’s new-look front three for the 2025/26 campaign.

Cunha will become United’s first-choice option on the left. At the same time, Mbeumo is expected to battle it out with Amad on the right, and the Swedish international joining through the middle will see Amorim apply significant upgrades to his attack that let him down last season.

Both Mbeumo and Cunha are known to be players who are equally competent at creating as well as goalscoring, which will be a blessing for Gyökeres or any striker that joins United this summer.

Although the trio may not be able to reach the same goal-scoring heights as they did last season, with 119 goal involvements between them in 2024/25, there is little doubt that they will be able to pull United back into the fight for the Champions League spots next campaign.
