Player Ratings: Manchester United vs Newcastle United (Carabao Cup)
Manchester United are knocked out of the Carabao Cup following an embarrassing 3-0 loss against Newcastle United.
Goals from Miguel Almirón and Lewis Hall were the least that the dominant team deserved in the first half. The rotated United side looked shot for confidence and can barely put together more than a few attacking sequences.
The defending for both goals was also school-boy from Erik ten Hag’s side.
In the second half, the hosts actually started strongly but then, again, defensive mistakes led to a third for Newcastle from Joe Willock which ended any chance of United getting back into the game .
The player ratings can be read below.
Andre Onana – 5/10
Can do nothing about the first two goals. Perhaps shoul’ve reacted quicker to the third but understandable given the power of the shot and the timid nature of the defence in front of him.
Diogo Dalot – 2/10
Strolling back in defensive transition, which allows the pass to go through to Almiron for the opening goal. Then amateur defending on the right for the second goal. Nothing working ing forward either. Deservedly hooked at half-time.
Harry Maguire – 5/10
Some good moments in possession. Headed clear straight to Lewis Hall for the second, however. But worse in the second half.
Victor Lindelof – 2.5/10
Some sloppy moments in possession. Way too passive for the third, which well and truly finished the game.
Sergio Reguilon – 3/10
Attempting to help in attack but that left United wide open on the left for the first. Not much being offered going forward either. Poor for the third too.
Casemiro – 4/10
Sloppy in possession. Replaced at HT.
Mason Mount – 4/10
Weak in duels, including for the opener. Better at the start of the second half then regressed.
Hannibal Mejbri – 3/10
Earning himself an early yellow card meant his approach was much more difficult and often found himself losing out on duels because of the risk of being on a booking. Replaced midway through the second half.
Antony – 3/10
Not good enough.
Anthony Martial – 4.5/10
Quiet. A couple of decent moments.
Alejandro Garnacho – 4.5/10
Not very sharp. Had the ball nicked a couple of times. One brilliant cross that could’ve been pounced on.
Subs
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6.5/10
Decent display.
Sofyan Amrabat – 4/10
Good start. Mistake for third goal and then poor.
Bruno Fernandes – 3/10
Not good.
Marcus Rashford – 4/10
Average.
Rasmus Hojlund – 5/10
Couldn’t do much.
