Manchester United drew 1-1 against Athletic Bilbao in their final pre-season fixture of the summer with the Premier League campaign eight days away.

Despite Erik ten Hag’s side dominating most of the game, it was a mistake that opened an opportunity that Nico Williams took full advantage of to score the only goal of the game.

United played with an extra man for the last stages of the game after Aitor Paredes was sent off for a cynical foul on Hannibal Mejbri.

The Reds seemed like they could not find a goal despite many chances, especially late on, up until the last kick of the game, where Facundo Pellistri slotted home to equalise.

The player ratings can be read below:

Tom Heaton – 7/10

Dealt with everything that came his way until the goal, where he couldn’t quite smother the through ball after the giveaway.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6/10

Neither him or Diogo Dalot are putting performances in worthy to start the opening Premier League game. Lacklustre.

Harry Maguire – 6/10

At fault for Bilbao’s goal and could not deal with their press on several occasions in the first-half. Better in the second half and a great headed assist to Pellistri for the equaliser.

Victor Lindelöf – 6/10

A decent performance overall.

Alvaro Fernandez -8/10

Shown some defensive fragilities by giving away a dangerous free-kick just outside the box in the first-half but much better going forward with his runs on the ball coming inside the pitch, very confident and comfortable.

Dan Gore – 8/10

Solid in the middle. Anchoring the midfield and offering in the build-up and aggression out of possession. A couple of misplaced passes but overall a good performance.

Christian Eriksen – 7.5/10

A very dangerous cross from deep midway through the half. His best display in pre-season so far.

Donny van de Beek – 7.5/10

A few mistakes in possession early on but afterwards he was quite impressive with linkup in the attack until being replaced at half-time.

Omari Forson – 7/10

Not as involved as the other two in the attack but still a good showing and some nice moments on the ball.

Jadon Sancho – 8.5/10

Really sharp playing in the centre. A beautiful nutmeg early on and almost played Forson through for a big chance afterwards. Involved in a lot of good that United done. Replaced midway through the second half.

Facundo Pellistri – 9/10

Dangerous going forward all game, as usual. Perhaps could’ve got a penalty after a good run into the box off the ball. Fouled on multiple occasions before a deserved goal at the death, cool finish.

Substitutes

Hannibal Mejbri – 7.5/10

Really impressive coming off the bench. Caused an opposition defender to receive a red card and made impacts all over the pitch. Close to scoring after ghosting into the box.

Jonny Evans – 6/10

Decent mostly. Did get skinned when Bilbao were on the break, however. Booked towards the end also.

Joe Hugill – 6/10

Not much involvement. A few decent runs.

Noam Emeran – N/A
