Player Ratings: Manchester United 3-0 Charlton Athletic (Carabao Cup)
Manchester United won 3-0 against Charlton Athletic as Erik ten Hag’s side progressed to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, with Antony and Marcus Rashford (2) scoring the goals.
In the first half, Ten Hag’s men were in control of the tie from minute one but were unable to find many openings in a heavily rotated side, which included 17-year-old Kobbie Mainoo.
Antony’s incredible finish in the first half was the opener, as the Brazilian scored his fifth of the season and ensured United progressed to the next round.
It was less control in the second half and United would’ve had some nerves before Rashford secured the win in the last moments of the game with two goals in the dying embers.
Here are the player ratings from Tuesday evening’s fixture.
Tom Heaton – 7/10
Some nice proactive moments in what was probably a busier evening than expected for the 36-year-old on his full debut.
Diogo Dalot – 6/10
Missed a chance in the opening exchanges. Worryingly came off injured midway through the first half. Let’s hope he’s back for the Manchester Derby.
Harry Maguire – 6/10
Some delightful crossfield passes when playing out of defence. A silly yellow card after wandering forward and losing the ball.
Lisandro Martinez – 7.5/10
It was very good to have the defender back in action for an entire game. Superb passing throughout and read the danger so well.
Tyrell Malacia – 7/10
The left-back linked up well with Alejandro Garnacho on the left. Good play when going forward and defensively sound too. Very poor crosses, however…
Scott McTominay – 5/10
A lacklustre performance against poor opposition. Didn’t look comfortable in the middle of the park and gave the ball away too many times. Did play a great through ball to Garnacho midway through the second period.
Kobbie Mainoo – 6/10
Wonderful achievement to make his debut. Some good moments but was quiet for the most part.
Fred – 7.5/10
His wonderful free-kick was denied by the post. Kept the ball ticking well before coming off.
Antony – 7/10
Beautiful curled effort into the far corner to get his second goal in as many games. Some sub-standard moments when he needed to be using his right foot.
Anthony Elanga – 7/10
He worked well through the middle, as United wait to sign backup striker Wout Weghorst, to link-up and stretch the opposition defence. Drifted offside as he thought he found a goal at the start of the second half.
Alejandro Garnacho – 8/10
Gave his opposite number a torrid evening. Constant danger on the left flank but could’ve assessed his options slightly better after taking on his man in the first half, better in this aspect during the second period.
Substitutes
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6.5/10
An impressive performance from the bench. A good ball across to set up Elanga for a goal but the forward was offside.
Casemiro – 8/10
Was pressed heavily when he came on and dealt with it well to keep things ticking. Was surprisingly bypassed a couple of times defensively though. Passing range in the late stages helped United score their second and then assisted Rashford’s third.
Christian Eriksen – 8/10
A classy performance from the bench, United looked to control the play whenever he was involved. So close to scoring with a low strike.
Marcus Rashford – 9/10
Rarely received the ball in his cameo before scoring two goals in the last minutes of the game. It goes like that when you’re in form like this man is. 15 goals for The Reds this season.
Facundo Pellistri – 7.5/10
Set McTomiany up for a chance in the last minutes then assisted Rashford in the last minute.
