Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-0 Southampton (Premier League)
Manchester United failed to get back on track in the Premier League with a 0-0 draw against relegation candidates Southampton and were dealt a huge blow with another Casemiro red card.
Erik ten Hag went with an extremely offensive lineup for today’s game, and United should have scored a couple of times early on. Although there were two sides to Ten Hag’s decision, and United looked very open defensively – the two centre backs playing out of their skin.
Just after the half-hour mark, disaster struck for United with Casemiro being sent off for a challenge in which he won the ball, with VAR citing the follow-through – where his foot had bounced up off the ball – as the reason for the decision being changed from a yellow card to a red.
The game had been a very end-to-end one as it was, but the rest of it played out as you would expect. United were still able to threaten with 10 men. In the end, however, it would end goalless.
Here is how UtdDistrict rated the players:
David De Gea – 7/10
Made some very good saves to keep United in the game.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6.5/10
Some good defensive contributions, but was caught sleeping on a couple of occasions. Didn’t take care of the ball well enough.
Raphaël Varane – 8.5/10
From the very start was up against it due to the lack of protection in front, which became a bigger issue once Casemiro was sent off. Defended admirably from start to finish, and nearly got a goal.
Lisandro Martínez – 8.5/10
Like his centre-back partner, was facing a great challenge from the very off but stepped up as well as he could have. Excellent performance.
Luke Shaw – 7/10
Could’ve been a little better defensively, but showcased quality in possession as always. Arguably should’ve had an assist for Weghorst.
Casemiro – 5/10
Was having a slightly shaky performance before the red card, but whether or not it should’ve been given United are now in a difficult position with Casemiro missing four domestic games.
Bruno Fernandes – 7/10
Created some good chances and almost scored a fantastic goal, although playing him in a deeper position saw United exposed defensively.
Jadon Sancho – 7/10
Started brightly and should’ve had an assist, played with the confidence that has been lacking lately.
Antony – 6.5/10
Created a good opportunity for Luke Shaw, but ineffective otherwise.
Wout Weghorst – 6/10
Maybe should’ve better anticipated a header from a Luke Shaw cross, but was sacrificed early for Mctominay after the Casemiro red card.
Marcus Rashford – 6.5/10
By far United’s biggest goal threat, as he usually is, although his final action was off today.
Substitutions
Scott Mctominay – 7.5/10
Came into a difficult situation but very much stepped up to the plate and helped United cover defensively.
Alejandro Garnacho – N/A
Facundo Pellistri – N/A
