In the second 45 minutes, United started with much more intensity, and it did not take long for Casemiro to head home a Bruno Fernandes corner in brilliant fashion. However, 15 minutes later, Villa were level through a great finish by midfielder Ross Barkley.

Calm with the ball at his feet, couldn’t do anything for Barkley’s finish.

Diogo Dalot – 7/10

Was very involved in attacking play, putting in some great crosses, but missed a huge chance at 0-0.

Harry Maguire – 8/10

Started well with some key interceptions and tackles. Maintained composure and poise very well and was key in the second half.

Leny Yoro – 6/10

A few nervy aerial moments and poor passes in the first half, but he was able to pull himself together in the second and put in some key interceptions.

Luke Shaw – 7/10

Held his own for the most part, did very well to stop Villa counter-attacks and keep the Reds ticking. In the second half, he did very well.

Solid all-round game, dealing well with the midfield battle, didn’t put too much of a foot wrong.

Casemiro – 9/10

Was very proactive and forward-thinking in midfield, and his header for the opening goal was brilliant. What a player.

Amad – 6/10

Tried to get involved in play, had a header brilliantly denied by Martínez, but could have had a little more urgency.

Bruno Fernandes – 8/10

Didn’t see much of the ball in the first half, but it was magic in the second. Sensational player.

Matheus Cunha – 7/10

Put in some dangerous crosses from the left. Needed to get on the ball more and was brilliant for his goal.

Bryan Mbeumo – 4/10

Struggled to get into the game, didn’t do too much in the way of attacking play.

Substitute player ratings

Benjamin Šeško – 7/10

Came on not too long after Cunha’s goal, and took his first goal well. Should have had a second if he had not played a poor pass to Amad instead, with a few minutes to play.

Manuel Ugarte – N/A

Introduced in stoppage time to inject fresh energy into midfield, not too much to be said.
