Player Ratings: Brentford 3-1 Manchester United (Premier League)

Manchester United fell to a 3-1 defeat against Brentford on Saturday afternoon after a dreadful performance from the Reds at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Fresh from last week’s victory over Chelsea, Manchester United started poorly and found themselves 2-0 down inside the opening 20 minutes. Ruben Amorim’s side were punished for early errors but began to grow into the game when Benjamin Šeško pulled one back midway through the first half.

After the break, the visitors lacked urgency, but were handed a lifeline on 70 minutes when Bryan Mbeumo was dragged down in the box by former teammate Nathan Collins.

While the penalty was clear, there was debate over whether Collins should also have been sent off, as he made no attempt to play the ball. VAR reviewed the incident but opted not to advise referee Craig Pawson to check the monitor.

Bruno Fernandes saw his spot-kick saved following a lengthy delay, and United’s misery was compounded when they conceded a third goal in the closing stages.

The United player ratings from the game can be read below.

United player ratings vs Brentford

Altay Bayındır – 4/10

He’s Manchester United’s first choice goalkeeper. The definition of failing upwards. Some camera saves made but he threw the ball towards Thiago for the second goal and dived away from the ball for the third.

Matthijs de Ligt – 4/10

An extremely poor moment before Brentford’s second goal and nervy all second half.

Harry Maguire – 3/10

Terrible for the opener. Too slow.

Luke Shaw – 5/10

One of United’s better players in the first half but worse in the second.

Diogo Dalot – 3/10

Awful pass behind Cunha led to the first goal and didn’t really impact the game at all.

Manuel Ugarte – 4/10

Like the goalkeeper, he’s failing upwards. Not a single good performance since the start of pre-season but he’s starting games.

Bruno Fernandes – 3/10

He was creating space for Matthijs de Ligt to get forward. It makes no sense. He wasn’t involved and then missed a penalty.

Patrick Dorgu – 6/10

Won a lot of duels. One of United’s better players.

Bryan Mbeumo – 7/10

Good for United’s goal to pressure the goalkeeper for the opener and good to win the penalty.

Matheus Cunha – 4/10

Eager to make an impact but it just didn’t come for him.

Benjamin Šeško – 6/10

Good determination to score his first United goal.

Substitutes

Kobbie Mainoo – 6/10

Leny Yoro – 6/10

Mason Mount – 6/10

Joshua Zirkzee – 6/10
