Player ratings as Manchester United draw 2-2 with Barcelona (Europa League)
Manchester United made a mega statement at the Camp Nou against Barcelona with a dominant performance in large parts, in a game which had months of hype building up to it.
Manchester United had the better share of chances in the first half and would have been frustrated with the tie goalless. They would pay for their wastefulness early in the second half, conceding poorly at the back post from a corner; something Erik ten Hag will no doubt have taken note of.
Marcus Rashford is a man in fine form right now though, and he would respond pretty quickly by scoring before forcing an own goal shortly after with some fantastic play for both. Barcelona would level with a Raphinha cross finding its way in. There would be no more goals, but United very arguably should’ve had a penalty with Kounde sent off.
Here is how UtdDistrict rated the players:
David De Gea – 7/10
Made some very good saves but was also poor for the goals conceded. Came off his line to punch away multiple times.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5/10
Stuck out like a sore thumb in the first half, the worst player on the pitch. Picked up a little in the second half.
Raphaël Varane – 9/10
Arguably the best player on the pitch – the Robert Lewandowski stopper. Pure and utter monster of a defender.
Luke Shaw – 7/10
Lewandowski troubled him a couple of times, but generally fared very well playing out of position once again.
Tyrell Malacia – 6.5/10
Had some good moments, but Raphinha caused him a lot of issues in what was a great display by the Brazilian winger.
Casemiro – 7/10
Could have done better for Barca’s equaliser and nearly scored a comical own goal, but brought the steel back to United’s midfield and seemed to pop up everywhere putting out fires.
Fred – 7.5/10
A poor first half followed by an excellent second. Fred either performs at one extreme or the other, and it felt like fans got both of those tonight. He assisted Rashford very well.
Bruno Fernandes – 8/10
Excellent creative performance, could have had a number of assists from the chances he created. At times didn’t track back enough when he needed to, but overall incredibly impactful performance.
Wout Weghorst – 6.5/10
Not a bad performance, but not a great one either.
Jadon Sancho – 7/10
Not his strongest performance, but created multiple very good opportunities. Solid performance.
Marcus Rashford – 9/10
A stadium considered by many to be European football’s biggest stage was just another game for Marcus Rashford. He is that guy right now and should’ve been the matchwinner. Was unlucky to not force a red card after a clear last man challenge from Kounde too.
Substitutes
Alejandro Garnacho – N/A
Wasn’t given too much time to impact the game, but offered his usual direct running threat.
