One star has been told that he has played his last game for Manchester United and that his career at the club is over after he received major criticism.
Manchester United’s goalkeeping problems have been clear in recent seasons, with André Onana struggling to recapture the form that once made him one of Europe’s standout ball-playing keepers.
Since his 2023 arrival from Inter Milan, the 29-year-old has been unable to reproduce the level of performance expected of him at Old Trafford.
After United bolstered their goalkeeping department with the summer signing of Belgian stopper Senne Lammens, Onana was sent out on loan to Turkish side Trabzonspor.
Lammens has made an impressive start to life at United, helping the team remain unbeaten in the five matches he has featured in so far this season.
Onana has ‘played his last game for Man Utd’
Even though Onana is still technically a United player, and performing well on loan in Turkey, the goalkeeper has been told that his career at Old Trafford is over.
Former Scottish international Gordon Strachan told Esports News : “I think Andre Onana has played his last game for Manchester United.
“At United you must have a presence in goal – whether it’s physical, attitude, or character, you have to be a presence. I don’t think he had that when he played for the club.
“A big problem for me is that I’m not sure Onana really wanted to be at Old Trafford. He looked like he’d rather be somewhere else and that might be what he needs to start enjoying his football again.
“At no point did I think he was enjoying playing football for United. I’d be shocked if I saw him play again for the club. I think his United career is over in that respect.”
Onana’s personality not right for United
Onana was given plenty of chances to prove himself at United but the lack of consistency was the thing that ruined his time at the club.
The Cameroon international could go on a good run of form but as soon as one mistake was made, he was a nervous wreck between the sticks.
On the other hand, we are seeing the positives of Lammens being a calm and cool character. The 23-year-old has made mistakes in his first five games but he has not let them define his performances.
That is the kind of personality United need in goal and, unfortunately, Onana just did not bring that and a permanent split next summer makes sense for all parties involved.
