Peter Schmeichel praises ‘fantastic’ Man Utd star, he might have new position under Michael Carrick

Peter Schmeichel has offered praise to one of Manchester United’s exciting stars after the derby victory over Manchester City.

Manchester United delivered a commanding display to claim a 2–0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

From the first whistle to the last, United were firmly in control, with Michael Carrick’s team showing defensive discipline alongside a potent attacking threat.

The hosts found the net five times during the match, although three goals were disallowed for marginal offside decisions. Nevertheless, strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu sealed a vital and deserved victory.

Lisandro Martínez was one of United’s standout performers, putting in a calm and assured defensive display and successfully nullifying Erling Haaland until the City forward was withdrawn after 80 minutes.

While United were dominating the game against their rivals, they were somehow still level heading into the last third of the clash.

Last season, they would have almost certainly failed to capitalise on their attacking dominance but they now have one of the must ruthless finishers in the country.

No one expected anything other than a goal when Bruno Fernandes fed the ball through to Mbeumo for the opener, and that is exactly what happened.

United legend Peter Schmeichel was delighted with the performance and singled out the ‘fantastic’ Mbeumo for his display.

“This was fantastic,” he said, as per the Premier League’s official website. “We talked about before the game: ‘Can you make a change to these players?’

“What he’s [Michael Carrick] done today, he’s picked the right players, gone about the right games. Mbeumo’s being fantastic.

“For the first time in a very, very long time, it was an [absolute] joy to watch Man Utd. It’s everything I wanted it to be today.”

Will Mbeumo play up front under Carrick?

Mbeumo now has eight goals for United so far this season and it feels like he can become even more influential in a quick, attacking system under Carrick.

He is ruthless in transitions and while he might not always play perfectly, the Cameroon international is ready for the crucial moments in games.

Interestingly, he was used as a lone striker against City and that could be a position he plays more under Carrick due to Amad’s importance to the team on the wing.

Benjamin Šeško will still want to play, and he has looked better in recent weeks, but it would not be a surprise to see Mbeumo up front in more games this season.
