Peter Schmeichel explains “really important signal” Manchester United have already sent this summer

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes the club’s early transfer dealings are a good sign ahead of next season’s campaign.

The ‘Great Dane’ Peter Schmeichel was part of incredible Manchester United squads from 1991 to 1999, including the famous treble-winning side in his final year with the club.

He is a considered a legend by United’s fanbase, and so his opinion of dealings within the club are to be held in high regard.

Therefore, Schmeichel’s approval of the recent transfer of Matheus Cunha from Wolves earlier in the month has to spell good things for the Red Devils.

Manager Ruben Amorim was always going to have to act decisively this window, hoping to avoid repeat of last season’s 15th place finish in the Premier League.

Schmeichel sees Cunha signing as ‘positive one’

In an interview with MUTV, while working at Soccer Aid, the former shot-stopper told reporters: “It’s a positive one, I think what we haven’t done, for a number of years, is to sign really, really good and well performing players from the Premier League.

“And, for that to be the first signing, that is an important signal to send to everyone.

“We’ve signed too many hopefuls, who have done well in other leagues. I don’t want to disrespect any other leagues but the Premier League is just played at a different pace. It’s relentless for 90 minutes every time. You don’t have a moment to relax.

“Playing in the Premier League is just more difficult than any other league.

“We’ve seen players who haven’t performed particularly well, with us as well, go abroad and you can see, all of a sudden, they can play football because it’s different.

“It’s nice we’ve signed within the Premier League and sometimes you have to pay a little bit more for that.”

Cunha’s Premier League pedigree is a valuable asset

Amorim’s signing of an experienced Premier League player is no accident, following their disastrous campaign last season, United are without European football for only the second time ever since the league’s debut in the early 90s.

In addition to being confined to domestic competitions, part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has set the gaffer the task of a top-six finish in the league this season- with his job on the line if he fails.

United will be looking to secure some more signings as soon as possible in order to capitalise on this momentum, with another experienced Premier League player in Bryan Mbeumo looking likely to be one of the next to join.

In order for more signings to be secured, United need to sell a few ‘dead weight’ players such as Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

Fans will be hoping that during the next two months the club will be able to push a few more of these deals over the line- allowing the squad to be strengthened ahead of the coming campaign.
