Peter Crouch has made a bizarre claim about Manchester United’s transfer business this summer and one £25 million star proves him wrong.
Manchester United were desperate for quality reinforcements this summer after their worst-ever Premier League campaign last term.
Ruben Amorim has been given an entire new frontline through the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
While there were many issues at Old Trafford last term, the lack of quality in attack was the most concerning aspect. The Reds scored just 44 goals in the Premier League.
Sesko scored 21 in all competitions last term, while Cunha and Mbeumo scored an additional 17 and 20 respectively. They are expected to improve the goalscoring problems at Old Trafford.
Crouch makes bizarre claim about United’s transfer business
No one is under the impression that United’s team is now perfect, but the forward line was one of the most important areas to address.
The biggest concern remains in the middle of midfield, with the need for a player like Carlos Baleba obvious after the pre-season games.
But one areas which isn’t really a huge problem for United right now is at wingback. Patrick Dorgu is improving and will be supported by Diego Leon while Amad can be the attacking spark in that position on the right side.
Bizarrely, former Premier League striker Peter Crouch has questioned United’s summer window and how signing attacking players has not ‘addressed the issues’ under Amorim. Instead, he thinks more wingbacks should have been added to the squad.
“We’ve always said about Amorim and the way he wants to play, getting fullbacks or wingbacks was so important yet they’ve signed players that are very good players but do they address the issues that Man United have,” Crouch said on TNT Sports.
“And let’s be honest, they had a lot of issues last season, finishing towards the bottom end of the league so those needed to be addressed. Have they addressed them? I’m not so sure.”
Dorgu proves Crouch wrong
If someone said to you that the midfield needed to be addressed before the frontline, you may be able to understand their point of view but it is simply bizarre to highlight the wingback area.
While it is an important role in Amorim’s system, the existing options there are solid enough and it seems like Crouch has forgotten that the Reds signed Dorgu for £25 million earlier this year.
The Danish international has been one of United’s best players during pre-season and looks ready to showcase improvement on that left flank.
United have signed a backup in that position and with no European football, there was simply no need to majorly bolster on the flanks before focusing on the forward line or midfield.
