Paul Scholes waxes lyrical about Premier League star “better than Declan Rice” amid Man Utd links

Paul Scholes has identified his top Premier League midfielder with claims that he shines over Arsenal’s Declan Rice as Manchester United links grow.

Manchester United have found a new life under interim head coach Michael Carrick, as a spot in the Champions League looks more certain.

The previous summer transfer window saw United invest heavily in their attacking line, spending over £200 million bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško, who have all been crucial aspects of United’s recent success.

Fans have been calling out for attention to turn to the midfield with the announced departure of Casemiro at the end of the season. Additionally, Manuel Ugarte could also leave after an underwhelming spell in red.

United legend Paul Scholes has named his top profile who could strengthen United’s core and fill the boots of Casemiro ahead of all other Premier League midfielders.

Scholes believes Tonali can fix United

Many elite names have been heard in conversation around United’s midfield search, such as Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton.

However, Paul Scholes identified Sandro Tonali as the top midfielder in the Premier League over the likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo.

Speaking on The Overlap earlier this season, the former United midfielder stated: “I love Sandro Tonali as well. He’s been brilliant. Very good. I would probably choose Tonali at this point.”

When questioned on his selection, the 51-year-old added: “Yes, you’re going to say Declan Rice, but I think he’s better than Rice. I really like Rice, don’t get me wrong, I think he’s got everything.

“Sometimes he takes a few too many touches of the ball and tries to look a bit more stylish than necessary. He can do everything, but I just don’t think he does it enough. I prefer Tonali, but they’re both good players.”

How Tonali could slot in at Old Trafford

European football would make squad depth an integral requirement for next season, regardless of who steps in as manager at Old Trafford.

Tonali is a perfect example of availability and work ethic, featuring 42 times already for Newcastle United this season, with the Magpies progressing in the Champions League and FA Cup, with a quarter of the Premier League season still to play.

The Italy international would be the glue in United’s midfield, breaking up play countless times, whilst also being an elite runner. Tonali’s work both on and off the ball could be a great asset covering for the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, who perhaps are not as effective in their work out of possession.

For now, United’s attention is set on Crystal Palace, who make the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday as Carrick’s Red Devils look to keep their unbeaten run alive.
