Paul Scholes has urged his former side Manchester United to make a shock signing for a Premier League star in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United are in an encouraging position under Michael Carrick after putting together a four-match winning streak against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.
Those victories have firmly thrust the Reds into the top-four picture, aided by the benefit of playing once a week due to the absence of European football.
The effects of the change in management are clear to see. Under the previous regime, there were frequent concerns about the squad’s suitability to Ruben Amorim’s tactical demands.
There will now be one eye on the summer transfer window, where United could be in the position to make several significant signings to strengthen their squad.
Scholes urges United to make shock signing for Romero
While the main area of concern for United is in the middle of midfield, Paul Scholes has suggested that they should look at signing a central defender.
Speaking after United’s win over Spurs on the weekend, Scholes claimed that Cristian Romero would be a player he would ‘love’ to see at Old Trafford even though he was sent off in that game.
Romero let his Spurs teammates down with a daft challenge on Casemiro which saw him receive a straight red card, but that isn’t changing Scholes’ opinion.
On his podcast, Scholes said: “I love watching him. I think his head’s checked out at Spurs. I’d love him at United. I just love the character of him.”
Romero is certainly a player who splits opinions in the game. He has been described by some as ‘world-class’ while others believe he is a liability and should be stripped of the captain’s armband at Spurs.
Scholes quiet on Martínez
It is a mystery how Scholes can speak with such admiration for a player who just ruined Spurs’ chances against United and is set to lead them to back-to-back finishes in the bottom half of the table.
Meanwhile, when it comes to a player who plays for the club he supports in Lisandro Martínez, the ex-player cannot get enough of criticising or mocking him alongside Nicky Butt on their podcast.

It is interesting that they have not had much to say about the Argentine defender since he has been one of the best-performing players under Carrick.
There is no doubt that Romero can be a top defender but he is not what United need right now, especially when there are priorities elsewhere in the team, like in midfield.
