Ruben Amorim was full of praise for one “top player” before Manchester United’s victory over Real Sociedad last week.

Ruben Amorim has struggled to turn around Manchester United’s difficult run this season, with his squad finding it hard to adapt to his system.

A shortage of quality options has put the Portuguese coach in a tough position, often relying on youngsters to fill the bench.

The upcoming summer transfer window will be crucial for United, as the club’s leadership aims to secure several signings to strengthen Amorim’s squad.

It has been reported that the club have several priority positions in mind, with the centre of midfield being one of them.

Scholes suggests Amorim wants incredible transfer swoop

United are looking to sign a midfielder ahead of next season, with Christian Eriksen set to depart the club and Casemiro’s future also unknown.

Paul Scholes believes that Amorim wants to make a shock swoop for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi despite reports suggesting that the Spaniard is on his way to Arsenal.

The ex-United midfielder noticed high praise that Amorim gave Zubimendi before the Reds won 4-1 against the La Liga outfit at Old Trafford.

“He’s a top player that can change a team,” Amorim said when asked about the 26-year-old midfielder before that game.

“Especially in that position (defensive midfield) he’s one position that can read and block transitions.

“He’s also the first guy in the build-up, I know the player really well, everybody knows he’s a top player that can change the team.”

When the TNT Sports punditry panel reacted to Amorim’s comments, Scholes said: “From that interview, the manager quite likes Zubimendi!

“If we sell three or four players we might be able to buy him but tonight’s a big night.”

United unlikely to make £50m+ moves this summer

It is well known that Zubimendi has a release clause worth just over £50 million and various reports say that Arsenal are in advanced negotiations for a deal.

United were on the receiving end of a transfer hijack when Chelsea swooped in to sign Sporting star Geovany Quenda despite the Reds being confident of a deal.

However, it seems unlikely that United are going to hijack Arsenal’s deal, with the price point for Zubimendi already being relatively high.

United need to address a lot of problems in their squad in the coming months and it is likely that we will see more deals done in the range between £20-40 million like the signings of Patrick Dorgu and Joshua Zirkzee.

The impressive signing of Ayden Heaven for £1.5 million has also provided a reminder that some top talent can be purchased for lower amounts.
