Paul Scholes was far from pleased with the idea that Manchester United could be open to selling Kobbie Mainoo amid interest from Chelsea.

Kobbie Mainoo has been one of Manchester United’s brightest sparks since his full Premier League debut against Everton in November 2023.

The teenager scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final last year and went onto be one of England’s standout performers at Euro 2024.

However, recent reports have claimed that United are begrudgingly open to hearing offers for their Academy starlet, alongside most other players in the squad.

While those same reports have clarified that it would take a huge offer to prise Mainoo away from Old Trafford, it has not stopped clubs like Chelsea from enquiring about the 19-year-old.

Scholes slams United for Mainoo rumours

The prospect of Mainoo leaving the club was brought up to United legend Paul Scholes before the game against Southampton on Thursday.

Scholes slammed the idea as “absolutely ridiculous” and claimed that Mainoo could be leading the club forward for the next decade.

“It’d be absolutely ridiculous if the club had to sell him or Garnacho, he’s been mentioned,” the ex-midfielder told TNT Sports.

“All the hard work the club had to do for him, he’s probably been here since seven or eight years of age Mainoo and then you have to sell him for some PSR rules? It’s ridiculous.

“And he’s United’s brightest spark, he’s probably the leading man who could be here for the next five to 10 years.”

Fans are in complete agreement with Scholes, with the idea of the main Academy product being sold a grim prospect for a club with United’s history.

Fortunately, it appears like something that is more than unlikely, with United trying to tie the midfielder down to a new deal at Old Trafford.

Garnacho, meanwhile, is attracting more concrete interest and could be set to depart if the right offer comes in this month.
