Paul Scholes has agreed with one of his former Manchester United teammates on a baffling decision made by Rúben Amorim against Leicester City.
Rúben Amorim’s first two and a half months at Manchester United have been anything but smooth since taking over from Erik ten Hag.
Appointed in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and managing just one win in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to steady a club in disarray.
There have been glimpses of progress, including impressive away victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency remains a concern. Under Amorim, United have won 10 of their first 20 matches, losing eight and drawing two.
Off the pitch, the challenges have been just as demanding. Three senior attackers left on loan during the winter transfer window without replacements coming in, while Lisandro Martínez faces the prospect of missing the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
However, there have been positives. United finally strengthened at left wing-back with the signing of Patrick Dorgu, while 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven has arrived as a promising addition for the future.
Scholes baffled by Amorim’s Dorgu decision
United’s latest fixture came in the form of an FA Cup win over Leicester City, where a last-minute header from Harry Maguire secured Amorim’s place in the fifth round, where they will face Fulham at Old Trafford.
However, a significant talking point after the game was Patrick Dorgu, who made his debut playing on the right-hand side, despite most people feeling he would start as a left wing-back.
Former United midfielder and club legend Paul Scholes has admitted he was baffled by the decision, explaining that he feels it’s a concern.
“A big concern for me is that we’ve been crying out for a left wing-back,” Scholes said on The Overlap.
“We buy one [Dorgu] and it tells me his [Ruben Amorim’s] head is a little bit fried and confused at the minute because he plays him at right wing-back and keeps Dalot on the left. What’s going on here?”
Scholes echos thoughts of a former teammate
Scholes is not the first ex-United player to have questioned the decision. Former defender Paul Parker, who was in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team squad when Scholes made his United debut in 1994, explained he feels Dorgu must be switched to the left flank.
“He [Amorim] can definitely improve on the left-hand side, the right side with Amad has been going quite well, and that can only improve if he can add the players he desires to that team,” Parker said earlier this week.
“The left side definitely needs somebody more attacking based. The new lad [Dorgu] could be that player if he’s allowed to play in the position that suits him. A left-footed player on the left-hand side with the ability to go round the outside rather than inside.
“It would be nice to have someone to try and get to the byline and deliver a ball. Nottingham Forest are a team that excite people because the cross the ball, they don’t dribble across the box and try and bend the ball in the far corner every time.”
