Paul Scholes has criticised Manchester United’s new goalkeeper Senne Lammens before he has even made his debut for the club.
Manchester United have not won a Premier League title since 2013, and their failings in recent years has brought upon criticism from all areas of the media.
While rival fans and critics are constantly speaking about United, it is actually the club’s own legends who slam the team the most.
Former United midfielder Christian Eriksen was asked about the impact of this in a recent interview after his move to Wolfsburg and he explained how it ‘doesn’t help’ the current players.
United’s latest signing Senne Lammens has not made his debut for the club yet, but has already been a topic of discussion in Paul Scholes’ new podcast.
Scholes’ ridiculous Lammens claim proves Eriksen right
Scholes, 50, is usually found on TNT Sports or The Overlap YouTube channel discussing his former club but has now launched a new podcast with fellow Class Of ’92 member Nicky Butt.
In the first episode of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Football’, Scholes criticised United’s decision to sign Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
The legendary midfielder does not seem to have ever watched the Belgian goalkeeper before but believes that his lower price tag means that he is ‘not a top goalkeeper’.
He instead thinks United should have given Manchester City’s new shotstopper Gianluigi Donnarumma ‘whatever he wants’ in order to sign him.
“You buy this lad from Belgium. What’s he cost, 20 million? I think that tells you everything about him at this point,” said Scholes.
“It tells me he’s (Lammens) not a top goalkeeper. As soon as that man (Donnarumma) became available, drive to Paris, go and get him, give him whatever he wants.”
Scholes is criticising for the sake of it
Scholes’ comments prove that Eriksen’s point is completely right. Doubts over relatively unknown signings are completely fair for both fans and pundits to have, but he is simply criticising for the sake of it.
If any club in world football can prove that price tags mean almost nothing, it is Manchester United. Scholes’ logic means that Jadon Sancho, Antony and Rasmus Højlund should be enjoying tons of success at Old Trafford right now.
Noussair Mazraoui cost even less than Lammens, yet Scholes would probably consider the defender as one of United’s finer bits of business in recent years.
Lammens does not need to perform to prove Scholes’ point wrong. The entire idea behind the criticism makes little sense. As a pundit, surely you either decide to watch the player to form judgement, or wait until he has played.

Offering players ‘whatever they want’ is probably something Scholes has also criticised about his former club in the past. Goalposts are moved to continue the criticism, and it is getting a little tiring.
