Paul Scholes calls for Manchester United star to be “banished” from Rúben Amorim’s dressing room
Paul Scholes has called for Rúben Amorim to “banish” one star from the Manchester United dressing room after he has been “letting his teammates down.”
Rúben Amorim’s opening two months at Manchester United have been anything but smooth sailing after he replaced Erik ten Hag as the side’s head coach.
Joining in the middle of November with United sat 13th in the Premier League and registering just one win in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set about his plan to rejuvenate a broken club.
While there have been fleeting moments of joy on the pitch such as wins over Arsenal and Manchester City away from home, the club have lost seven of their opening 17 fixtures under Amorim, winning eight and drawing two.
Amorim has also been tasked with putting out various flames off the pitch, with the financial situation at United very tight and rumours swirling surrounding the futures of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and others.
Scholes hands damning verdict on Rashford
Rashford has not featured for United since the beginning of December. Amorim recently hinted that he feels the winger is not applying himself well enough in training after he revealed he was looking for a new challenge in 2025.
However, former United midfielder and club legend Paul Scholes has explained that he feels Rashford’s attitude has let those around him down and that he should be banished from the dressing room by Amorim.
Despite not having been involved during matchdays of late, Rashford continues to train with the first-team squad.
“I think Marcus has let a lot of people down with his attitude and I think that’s what the manager is trying to say. You think of the young players coming through and think of Garnacho,” Scholes said on The Overlap.
“They’re looking up to people like Marcus now and he’s 27, he’s clearly not training properly and not living his life properly. They’re the examples these people should look at.
“I remember when I told the manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] I didn’t want to play against Arsenal in the cup. In the meeting afterwards, I thought I was going to get a b********* here, but he said to me ‘the worst thing you did was let your teammates down’ and that stuck with me.
“I wasn’t really thinking about that and now I think Marcus Rashford is doing the exact same. Ok, he’s not refusing to play, but the way he is behaving and the way he’s training…
“In a way, he’s saying he doesn’t want to be involved with the team and the fact he’s letting his teammates down, he should be banished from the dressing room. If he’s in and around that and young people are seeing him him as an example, the sooner he’s gone the better.”
