Paul Scholes has backtracked over comments he made about one Manchester United star has he names five recent positives under Rúben Amorim.

The last few months at Manchester United has been an unprecedented time in the club’s history, with the club sat 13th in the Premier League table.

Both on and off the pitch, the club has been in turmoil, with inconsistent results in domestic competitions coupled with continuing financial issues that have seen the club axe around 400 staff members in the last eight months.

Head coach Rúben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November and has failed to stabilise the ship amid an injury crisis and the impossible job of teaching his players a new system in pre-season.

However, in the last few weeks, some of the 40-year-old’s squad have stepped up their performances, with Joshua Zirkzee and Bruno Fernandes two players who have been lauding praise.

Scholes backtracks on previous De Ligt comments

Another player who has been performing well of late is centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, with Amorim stating the Dutch defender has been doing “incredible things” in the past few weeks.

However, De Ligt has not always had the backing of United’s legends, with Paul Scholes slamming the 25-year-old’s signing earlier this season.

On the latest episode of The Overlap’s Fan Debate, Scholes was reminded by Stretford Paddock’s Adam McKola that he once claimed De Ligt was not better than Harry Maguire, to which Scholes admitted that this has not been the case.

“He has done a lot better [than Maguire], of course he has,” Scholes said, although he did hint that he is not entirely sold on the Dutchman as he stated: “I just… Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League.”

Scholes takes five positives from recent performances

Beyond the conversation about De Ligt, Scholes also explained he feels five players have shown positives in the last few weeks, highlighting Bruno Fernandes’ performances as well as recent goals from Rasmus Højlund and Alejandro Garnacho.

“Bruno is a positive, I suppose, isn’t he,” Scholes continued. “Højlund scored, Garnacho scored. I think the last few weeks, we’ve looked better.”

Further, Scholes was then asked about Joshua Zirkzee, to which he said: “Yeah, there’s a talent, there is, yeah. He doesn’t look like a goal scorer to me. I think he will bring people into play.”

Finally, the former United midfielder also dished out some praise for Casemiro, who has performed well in the last few weeks after a string of poor performances mixed in with a lack of game time.
