Paul Pogba has been touted as an option for Manchester United this summer after Rúben Amorim was hit with an £80 million problem after the Europa League final.
Manchester United’s dismal season is now coming to a tragic end, with a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final being the final nail in the coffin.
Sitting in the bottom five of the Premier League, with a trophy-less campaign now confirmed, a massive summer clearout will be on the cards for Ruben Amorim’s side.
The issue with this for United however, is the fact that it may be increasingly difficult for Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team to attract the calibre of players required to catapult them up the table.
This being said, it may be necessary for United to take a few risks in the window, which former Treble winner Dwight Yorke seemingly agrees with as he advocates for the signing of a controversial star.
Pogba transfer now an option for United this summer
After being hit with a doping ban, Paul Pogba was suspended from any form of professional football for 18 months, and saw his contract at Juventus terminated once he could return. As of March 2025, the Frenchman was able to return to professional football.
Yorke, who scored 66 goals in 152 appearances for United, stated that his former club should be considering bringing the 31-year-old back for a third spell in Red.
“I don’t think United can afford not to consider a move for Pogba, because he’s coming back with a point to prove,” Yorke said. “It’s a second – maybe a third – chance for Pogba to show that he’s still one of the best and [that] he can do it at Manchester United.
“I think he still believes he’s been harshly treated over the last few years and by what’s happened. He’d get a platform at United to turn their fortunes around. There’s a lot to like about the transfer.
“You could sense that it might be the right occasion to take a punt on him. You’ve got to think a little deeper about what he’s bringing to the table.
“Look at what his motivation is now, and if he makes the current squad better. If I was in charge, giving him the chance to redeem himself on a huge stage, I would seriously consider it.”
United’s £80m ‘black hole’ making signings difficult
Amorim’s side may struggle to find the funding necessary to obtain the multitude of players that they are searching for this summer, after the Europa League loss saw the club hit with a series of
United are facing a financial shortfall of around £80 million following a disappointing season, according to The Times.
The club has been hit by a range of losses, including a £10 million penalty from Adidas, £20 million less in Premier League merit payments, and a £30 million drop in revenue due to missing out on European football for the first time in ten years.
The club is also set to lose an estimated £20 million in matchday income, as fewer home fixtures have slashed ticket and hospitality revenues. This summer, these combined setbacks have left United with far less room to manoeuvre in the transfer market.
With finances tight, the club’s decision-makers may be forced to take calculated risks on high-profile but uncertain signings such as Pogba in hopes of rebuilding a squad capable of returning to the summit of English football.
