Premier League release Patrick Dorgu red card statement, Man Utd learn length of ban
Manchester United’s January signing Patrick Dorgu was sent off in the first-half against Ipswich Town on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United won 3-2 against Ipswich Town in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford, after being reduced to 10 men.
Ruben Amorim’s side fell behind early in the half due to a disastrous mix-up between André Onana and Patrick Dorgu, resulting in a calamitous goal.
Bruno Fernandes then turned the game around, delivering two excellent set-pieces. The first forced a Sam Morsy own goal and Matthijs de Ligt fired in the next one.
However, soon afterwards Dorgu flew into a challenge on Omari Hutchinson and VAR intervened, telling referee Darren England to go to the monitor to review the tackle.
It was inevitable that the United player would be shown a red card and that’s exactly what happened, with Amorim’s men then conceding an equaliser just before half-time.
Although Harry Maguire headed in a goal early in the second half to restore United’s lead and secure the three points.
Premier League release statement on Dorgu red card
There were not many complaints from United fans when Dorgu was sent for an early shower and the Premier League have since clarified the decision on X.
The Premier League’s Match Centre account, which publishes explanations on most high-profile VAR decisions, explained that the VAR deemed Dorgu’s tackle as “serious foul play”.
“VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible red card to Dorgu for the challenge on Hutchinson – with the contact deemed serious foul play. Upon review, the referee issued a red card to Dorgu,” they wrote on X.
It was a big shame for Dorgu, who has been one of United’s brightest sparks since his £25 million move from Lecce last month.
United learn Dorgu ban length
The 20-year-old defender will now be unavailable for United’s next three domestic fixtures due to the incident being “serious foul play”.
Amorim’s side play in the FA Cup against Fulham next and that will be included in Dorgu’s ban, meaning he will only miss two Premier League fixtures.

The Reds face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, 9 March and then Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, 16 March.
However, United also have fixtures against Real Sociedad sandwiched in between those games – and Dorgu will be available for both of those games as his ban does not apply for European competition.
Dorgu will next be available for United in domestic competition when they travel to Nottingham Forest after the March international break.
