Patrick Dorgu scored during Manchester United’s win over Manchester City on the weekend and he is finding form at Old Trafford.
Manchester United produced a dominant performance at Old Trafford, securing a 2–0 Premier League victory over Manchester City.
From kickoff to full time, United controlled the contest, as Michael Carrick’s side combined defensive solidity with sharp attacking intent.
The hosts actually put the ball in the net five times, though three efforts were ruled out for tight offside calls. Despite those setbacks, goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu ensured a crucial and thoroughly deserved win.
For Dorgu, this was his fourth goal contribution in six games and an example of how he has improved his form after criticism from previous boss Ruben Amorim.
Amorim’s criticism of Dorgu
Dorgu was experiencing difficulties earlier this season and came out of the team under Amorim. The then-United boss told journalists, “You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touches the ball. I can feel the anxiety.”
It was a punchy quote and one that could have easily knocked the confidence of a 21-year-old but Dorgu has responded well on the pitch.
Darren Fletcher used him at left-back and left-wing during his two games in charge, while Carrick opted to start him in attack against City ahead of Matheus Cunha.
Dorgu has not even been at United for 12 months and he has already played at left-back, left-wingback, right-wingback, as the right and left-sided no.10s and now as a left-winger.
When he arrived at the club, it was clear that Dorgu would be an option on both flanks and many fans are unsure which side he is more comfortable on.
Dorgu’s interesting statement in unreleased interview
Dorgu has previously explained that he is eager to play wherever on the pitch for United. He is the type of player who will give all of his effort no matter what.
But, according to the MEN, the 21-year-old explained recently in an interview with Sky Sports that he prefers to play on the right side. He played as a right-winger for Lecce fairly often before he joined the club.
That interview was not released due to the sacking of Amorim, whose explosive exit took precedence over any other stories during that week.
But it is interesting to know that Dorgu prefers working from the right side. During his 43 appearances for United, he has only played on that flank five times.
With players like Amad and Mbeumo in the building, and the move to a four-at-the-back formation, it appears unlikely that he will play many minutes from that side, but Dorgu is certainly not one to complain and it seems like he’s developing well from that left-flank.
