Patrick Dorgu has echoed a message from Diogo Dalot after one of the latest Manchester United transfers this summer.
Manchester United brought in Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu from Lecce earlier this year to strengthen the wing-back role in Ruben Amorim’s squad.
The 20-year-old made a bright start at Old Trafford before experiencing a dip in form. However, he recovered well and finished the 2024/25 season as one of United’s standout performers.
Dorgu has continued that momentum into pre-season, with the Danish youngster emerging as one of Amorim’s top performers in the early summer friendlies.
Heading into the new season, Dorgu will also have some competition on the left flank after the arrival of Diego Leon from Cerro Porteño this summer.
Dorgu echoes Dalot message after United transfer
Leon, 18, looks like he will be involved with the United first-team this season after showing some promising signs during pre-season.
Dorgu is welcoming the competition with the youngster and also explained how he’s trying to help him settle into the club, even though there is a language barrier at the moment.
“I try to help him but it’s difficult with the language,” Dorgu told The United Stand. “But no, it’s good, it’s a good addition to the team.
“Everyone will have competition for their spots so it’s all about pushing each other and helping the team to perform at their best.”
It wasn’t too long ago that Diogo Dalot had a very similar message for when Noussair Mazraoui arrived at the club last summer as competition on the right side of defence.
“By having two players per position, I think that gives us quality, but it also brings us more responsibility to each of us,” Dalot explained.
“Every time we have an opportunity to play, we have to give our best because we know that there’s someone who wants to play in your position as well.”
Dorgu and Leon ready to compete
Heading into the new season, Amorim is aware that he will only have one match per week and there will be limited game-time for some of his players.
Barring a few in the squad, who will almost be guaranteed to play as long as they’re fit, it should be a battle for many players to get into the team.

Dorgu has started pre-season well but it is clear that he is aware that there is an energetic and youthful option ready to compete with him.
It will be interesting to see how that left-wingback dynamic develops this season as both players seem like they have a point to prove.
