Patrick Dorgu has broken his silence after Rúben Amorim chose to play him on the right-hand side of Manchester United’s win over Leicester City last week.

Patrick Dorgu signed for Manchester United towards the end of January after a £25 million fee was agreed between Rúben Amorim’s team and Serie A side Leece.

Dorgu has joined United to bolster Amorim’s threat from the wide areas, with many hoping that the 20-year-old Denmark international would replace Diogo Dalot at left wing-back.

However, against Leicester City in the FA Cup last week, the new signing started on the right hand side for his debut, with many bemused as to why Dalot was still on the left, with Dorgu on the right.

He was taken off at half-time and replaced by Alejandro Garnacho, who eventually went on to win the Player of the Match award after second-half goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Harry Maguire secured qualification to the fifth round.

Dorgu breaks silence on wing-back preference

Speaking to club media ahead of the upcoming fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, Dorgu was asked how he felt being deployed on the right against Leicester, to which he explained he did not mind it as he’s comfortable on both sides of the pitch.

“I don’t really mind,” Dorgu explained. “I can play both sides. I’ve played a lot on the right for my old team, and I’ve played on the left as well. So I’m quite comfortable in both positions.”

Further, the United No. 13 was asked about what the next steps are now that he is set up at Old Trafford.

“It’s just about improving, getting better, and getting used to the new coach, the new system and everything,” he continued.

How Amorim will improve Dorgu

Speaking to the press on Friday afternoon, Amorim was asked why he feels players sometimes play better after leaving Old Trafford, and using Dorgu as an example, the 40-year-old explained that he feels players benefit from the team having a strong core – something Dorgu may benefit from.

“I don’t know, sometimes it is like that and it can happen in any club like that,” Amorims aid. “This is a club with a lot of pressure.

“In this kind of club you have to have almost [have] like a base of a team to put in younger players that have come from abroad that come from a team with a strong base, that can help them with dealing with that pressure. In that moment, we do not have that and it is also really hard on them.

“You feel it in [Patrick] Dorgu, he was a little bit nervous in the first moment, but if you are playing better as a team and you have a strong core, that can [help] cope with this and [when] we are winning games and are strong in the games, like it was supposed to be at this kind of club, it will be more easy for this kind of players to be free and play their football.

“Football is like that and when you reach that level, you have to cope with pressure and sometimes they go to other clubs and they are free without the pressure and they play better. I don’t know.”
