Owen Hargreaves believes that three summer signings worth £163 million could completely change Ruben Amorim’s fortunes at Manchester United.
Manchester United have had a dire season in the Premier League, and their campaign rests on success in the Europa League as they prepare for the semi-finals against Athletic Club.
Erik ten Hag was sacked, and then Rúben Amorim joined the club in November, but the Portuguese boss has experienced major difficulties since then.
It is clear that the United squad needs significant improvements in a lot of areas, but in particular, the attacking unit.
Goalscoring has been a major issue for Amorim’s side. Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee have three goals each in the Premier League this season.
£163m trio can change Amorim’s fortunes
Despite their terrible position in the league this season, Owen Hargreaves believes that it isn’t too complicated to solve United’s issues for next season.
The ex-midfielder believes that three United targets could solve the major issues in the squad and help Amorim improve the situation going forward.
Signing Victor Osimhen and Matheus Cunha would address the goalscoring issues in the squad, Hargreaves says, while Ederson from Atalanta has “crazy legs” for the demands in Amorim’s midfield.
“For real, if you look at United, the biggest issue is goalscoring,” Hargreaves said on the latest episode of Rio Ferdinand’s podcast.
“If you say they added [Victor] Osimhen, [Matheus] Cunha and Ederson from Atalanta, Man United are different next season.
“Can you imagine Cunha and Bruno? [Ederson] is perfect in a 3-4-3 because he’s got crazy legs. I think that system is very niche and you need legs.”
Are United close to signing Hargreaves’ trio?
With the summer window coming closer, United are already working on deals and developments have been made in terms of a potential move for Cunha.
The Wolves star has a £62 million release clause in his contract, and it has been revealed that United have made positive developments in discussions with his agents and are now the frontrunners for his signature.
Meanwhile, some reports from Turkey have claimed that the Reds also have a £51 million agreement in place to sign Osimhen – whether or not that is true is certainly up for debate. However, it is clear that the Nigerian is high on the list of United’s striker targets.
In terms of the midfield, Ederson has been regularly linked with an Old Trafford move and would cost around £50 million to sign this summer. While the Reds remain interested in him, UtdDistrict understands that there have been no significant developments so far.
Those three players would end up costing a combined £163 million, and while it seems unlikely that United can secure all of them, Hargreaves seems to believe it is the perfect move.
