Ruben Amorim and Owen Hargreaves came to the same assessment when judging Manchester United’s win over Fulham.

The game between Manchester United and Fulham was a lacklustre affair, widely regarded as one of the dullest matches of the Premier League season.

Even so, Ruben Amorim and his team will be relieved to have claimed all three points despite their uninspiring performance.

United’s lead came from a deflected shot by Lisandro Martínez, which looped over the Fulham goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Toby Collyer continued to impress, coming off the bench to deliver a vital goal-line clearance that prevented Fulham from equalising after a set piece.

The Reds will be happy to take home three points but significant improvement is needed within this team.

Hargreaves praises “brilliant” Collyer for United

One of the shining lights for United was the impact from Collyer off the bench as he continues to get opportunities under Amorim.

The midfielder had to wait to get his chance after starting off injured when Amorim took charge but he has since impressed at the training ground.

In all of his appearances so far, the Portuguese boss has been left impressed and so he continues to provide chances for the youngster.

Collyer provided his biggest contribution to the team at Craven Cottage, however, with his goal-line clearance crucial to the victory.

In fact, former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes that the 21-year-old’s “brilliant” header won the Reds this game.

“To be fair, thanks to Collyer, he’s why they won that game. That header on the line was brilliant,” the 2008 Champions League winner told Premier League Productions.

“Centre mid coming on, young kid, only 21 and he just read it. And that’s all football is at the highest level, you want people to make decisions in big moments.

“Toby comes on and for whatever reason he thought that ball could go there on that corner.”

Amorim agrees with Hargreaves assessment

Speaking to broadcasters after the game, Amorim had an extremely similar assessment to Hargreaves, suggesting that Collyer “saved our team” against Fulham.

“[Toby Collyer] did it [goalline clearance] in practice one time, really, like the same play! So, if you do the right things in practice, you can save your team in the game.

“Toby saved our team today.”

The Reds have games coming thick and fast, with their next clash coming on Thursday against FCSB in their final Europa League league phase game.

A win is crucial to ensure United do not have to play extra fixtures and Collyer may be trusted to start that game.

He did well in his European debut against Rangers last week and may be trusted once again despite his tender age and the importance of the game.
