Owen Hargreaves has explained why he hopes that one of Manchester United’s best players stays at the club despite rumours surrounding a potential exit.
Manchester United seem to be in a strong place under Michael Carrick after stringing together four consecutive victories against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.
That run has pushed the Reds firmly into contention for a top-four finish, with the added benefit of a reduced schedule due to the absence of European football.
The change in management is clearly paying dividends. Under the previous regime, there were regular concerns over whether the squad was suited to Ruben Amorim’s tactical system.
Now, the team looks together, with Carrick drawing improved performances from several of United’s most influential players.
Hargreaves hopes ‘one of the best’ United stars remains at club
United’s improved form has not only coincided with Carrick’s arrival, but also the return of Harry Maguire to the defensive line.
The English centre-back was rushed back into the side following an injury and has partnered Lisandro Martínez in a back-four where United have shown defensive improvement.
Former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has offered praise to Maguire and suggested that United should offer him a new contract. His current deal expires in the summer.
“From a leadership standpoint, if you want to defend your box as they did in the first two games, which you have to because teams have gone more old school, then Harry’s one of the best at that,” said Hargreaves.
“You only really know players when it’s difficult. Other than Bruno, they didn’t have enough leaders. With Harry’s leadership and everything he’s been through, he can mentor younger players. I hope he stays. Credit to him for how he’s come through and kept playing well.”
United need to have leaders
There is no getting away from the fact that losing Casemiro and Maguire in the same window would be difficult for United to deal with as they are two of the most experienced players.
The club can certainly buy younger options who are able to provide top qualities but it is nearly impossible to replace the intangibles that experienced players bring to the table.

It would be nice if United were able to renew Maguire’s contract on fresh terms. He would be a valued squad member who has proven that he can still step up and play when needed.
While it is a good idea that United are buying young players who can improve in the coming years, they also need experience in the squad and Maguire brings that in spades.
