Former Manchester United academy player Demetri Mitchell has said that a current United player out on loan could break into the first team.
Manchester United were active in the summer transfer window, signing three new forwards to address their lack of goals in last season’s Premier League campaign, as well as signing a new goalkeeper in Senne Lammens, who impressed on his debut against Sunderland.
As well as several new signings, United also sanctioned high-profile exits, such as Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea, Antony to Real Betis, and Jadon Sancho to Aston Villa after being deemed surplus to requirements in Rúben Amorim’s team.
Another area of significant activity for United was the loan system, with several promising academy players sent out to gain valuable first-team experience.
After retiring from football, Jonny Evans took on the role of Head of Loans and Pathways this summer, overseeing a group of 14 academy players who have gone out on loan for the season.
Jack Moorhouse impressing on loan
Jack Moorhouse moved to League One outfit Leyton Orient in the summer, and, after impressing in the Under-21s last season, has carried that into his loan spell with Orient.
After scoring in an EFL Trophy fixture, Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens praised the Irish midfielder for his “outstanding” performance.
The 19-year-old has accumulated 518 minutes for his loan side as he looks to gain vital playing experience in League One.
These performances have also been praised by former academy star Demetri Mitchell, who posted on X saying: “United fans, from what I’ve seen I think Jack Moorehouse has a real chance you know.”
Silver lining in the lack of first-team opportunities
Moorhouse has been involved in first-team training a number of times now, also being included in the squad on some matchdays, but has yet to make his first-team debut.
This season, even with several senior players struggling for form, chances for Academy graduates have been limited. Amorim has largely chosen to rely on his established first-team squad rather than introducing younger players into competitive matches.
A major obstacle for United’s youth is the lack of available minutes caused by the absence of European football, following their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in last season’s Europa League final.
The silver lining to this, however, is the sheer number of young players sent out on loan in search of regular game time in the lower leagues to develop their game.
Although not all 14 of the players sent out on loan will regularly feature, there is bound to be some success from these loans, as seen by Moorhouse, who has featured a lot for Leyton Orient, and Harry Amass, who has featured five times for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship so far this season.
