“Our intention” – Eddie Howe reveals how Newcastle will play vs Man Utd, it suits Michael Carrick perfectly

United are looking hopeful ahead of the Newcastle fixture after Eddie Howe revealed an approach that suits the Reds almost perfectly.

Manchester United are taking a trip to St James’ Park on Wednesday evening as they face Newcastle United in a midweek Premier League clash.

Since Michael Carrick has filled the dugout, United have not lost a single one of their 10 fixtures and are now the only Premier League side to have not lost a game in 2026.

Despite not having the home advantage, Man United will no doubt be entering the game with a certain edge about them. Not only were Man United victorious over the Magpies when they faced them at Old Trafford earlier this season, but they are also going into this game off the back of a win.

Sunday afternoon saw United come back from a 1-0 lead from visitors Crystal Palace after goalscorer Maxence Lacroix fouled Mathues Cunha, resulting in a red card and penalty. With a successful penalty from Bruno Fernandes and a second goal from Benjamin Šeško, the Reds ended the game with all three points and a new spot in third in the Premier League standings.

However, the same can’t be said for Eddie Howe’s men. Saturday saw a dramatic game held at St James’ Park, with the game ending in a 2-3 loss to Newcastle, with Howe’s side now 13th in the Premier League standings and the United fixture not an easy one to bounce back from.

“They have some really good players…” Howe talks tatics

Ahead of the Wednesday match, Howe has spoken very openly regarding pn how he plans to tatically approach this game.

The Chronicle shared how Howe said he’ll be preparing for the match. “Our intention in every game is to get into them, be a proactive team rather than a reactive team. Attack them. They have tweaked things tactically; they have a really good atmosphere there.

“You can see an upturn in their general performance; they have some really good players. It is a chance for us to rediscover our best form at home.”

While Howe wants his team to focus heavily on their attack, this may just be an issue for the Englishman, practically handing Carrick an easy game, with the 44-year-old really leaning into strengthening United’s counter-attack during his time as interim head coach.

This was seen instantly, with Carrick’s first two fixtures against title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal, where United took the win in both and can only hope the same will happen on Wednesday.

United handed Newcastle injury boost

Not only may Newcastle be taking the wrong tactical approach, but Howe has also revealed that his squad has been hit by injuries, with two big-name players missing from Wednesday’s team sheet.

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes is out of action until April with a hamstring injury, and forward Nick Woltemade is potentially out with an illness.

When asked to speak on the matter, Howe stated, “Jacob Ramsey trained fine yesterday. Potentially a sickness in the squad, Nick Woltemade hasn’t trained through illness, but we will give him every chance for tomorrow,”

It has also been suggested that right-back Tino Livramento may be sitting out of tommorows game, joining Fabian Schar and Emil Krath who continue to remain out of the squad for a prolonged period of time.
