Rúben Amorim has hit back after rumours linked Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal this summer.
The last few days have seen Manchester United fans in shock as Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have emerged as a strong candidate to sign Bruno Fernandes this summer.
According to various reports, the Middle Eastern club have offered Fernandes a three-year contract worth an astounding £195 million, as well as potentially plotting a British record bid for the player at the beginning of June.
However, from the English club’s side, reports have stated that United have zero intention of selling their club captain this summer despite the possible financial benefits, with the player seen as a key part of Rúben Amorim’s project at Old Trafford.
Although Fernandes’ entourage has rejected the Saudi side’s initial proposal in two meetings, a third meeting is expected soon.
Amorim hits back at Fernandes Saudi rumours
The Fernandes transfer rumours have been building up amid United’s preparations for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final clash against Athletic Club. United hold a 3-0 lead after dominating the La Liga outfit in Bilbao last week.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Amorim was asked about the interest, to which he reiterated the club’s stance that they have no intention of selling Fernandes this summer.
“I think it’s easy to understand that, not just because of the numbers but the way he plays. The importance he has had during his five years here,” the United boss said when asked about his importance.
“He is a top player and we need top players, he is a leader and captain. He’s really important. It is normal that a lot of clubs want a player like Bruno, like Garnacho, like others.
“But we want to keep the best players and Bruno is clearly one of the top players in the world and our idea hasn’t changed, we want Bruno here.”
Fernandes wants to win trophies with United
This is not the first time Fernandes has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford amid his elite performances while at the club in the last six seasons.
Earlier in 2025, the United talisman was linked with a £90 million move to Real Madrid. However, this was shut down as subsequent reports explained that the United captain focused entirely on returning United to the top.
Fernandes has been very public in stating that he is keen to remain at Old Trafford because he believes the club are heading in the right direction under Amorim. Having signed a new three-year deal with United last summer, he remains committed to the club.
Since signing for United in January 2020, Fernandes has won two trophies, and if United make it to the Europa League final, he will hope to add a third later this month.
However, there is little doubt that the 30-year-old has bigger ideas, with both the Premier League and Champions League in his sights.
