Ones to watch: Manchester United vs Fulham (Premier League)
The last time these two sides met provided one of the most entertaining games of the season as United progressed in the FA Cup under bizarre circumstances.
Three red cards and a penalty in the space of a minute flipped the game on its head when United and Fulham went head-to-head back in March. Aleksander Mitrovic was handed an eight-game ban on the back of his antics that evening and has only recently returned for selection.
The game on Sunday shouldn’t be as frantic, with United having already sealed Champions League qualification and Fulham unable to move up or down from their tenth-placed position. That said, Fulham may be keen to right some wrongs of the FA Cup tie in March as they were much the better side up until the penalty and the drama that followed.
Erik ten Hag is likely to rest a few of his key players ahead of the FA Cup final against Manchester City next Saturday so whilst United’s home form has been exemplary since the defeat against Brighton on the opening day, Fulham will be encouraged by that. Marco Silva’s side will be coming to Manchester to put a dampener on the proceedings.
Here are the ones to watch ahead of the game.
Manchester United – Alejandro Garnacho
Alejandro Garnacho’s breakthrough season has been breathtaking at times and he hasn’t missed a beat since returning from injury.
United’s young winger has impressed on his cameos from the bench since returning and Sunday’s fixture should present a great opportunity for him to start. Fulham know his strengths all too well after his late winner against them at Craven Cottage before the World Cup break.
He may not be favoured to be in Ten Hag’s starting XI against Manchester City next weekend but he’s proving that he can decide games – even from the bench. A good performance on Sunday may give the United boss a selection headache.
Fulham – Aleksander Mitrovic
The Serbian striker has had a brilliant season back in the Premier League and has picked up where he left off after serving his eight-game suspension for pushing the referee in this fixture in March.
Fulham’s no.9 has three goals in two games since his return and given the nature of his character, he’s probably been eyeing up this fixture for the last couple of months.
Mitrovic has scored 15 goals in just 27 appearances this season and has been crucial in Fulham’s impressive season back in the top flight. No doubt, he’ll be keen to add to his tally on Sunday.
