Michael Carrick has sent a message to England boss Thomas Tuchel about one of his best performing Manchester United players.
Manchester United made another strong start in their clash with Fulham, taking the lead through Casemiro. The Brazilian rose highest to head home a pinpoint cross from Bruno Fernandes.
United doubled their advantage early in the second half when Matheus Cunha finished off a superb assist from Casemiro. With the Reds in control, both players were later withdrawn as the game appeared to be heading towards a comfortable victory.
However, Fulham were handed a lifeline when Raúl Jiménez converted a penalty, before grabbing a dramatic equaliser shortly after the 90-minute mark.
United refused to surrender, and substitute Benjamin Šeško struck a late winner in stoppage time to seal all three points for the Reds.
Carrick praises Maguire after United win
While much of the attention within United’s English players has been on Kobbie Mainoo, and his potential push to play at the World Cup, Harry Maguire isn’t doing himself any harm either.
The experienced defender came back into the side for Carrick’s first game in charge and has been crucial to all three of the victories.
Speaking about his decision to bring Maguire back into the team, Carrick explained how importance his experience and presence has been at the back.
“We’ve got some really good centre-backs at the club, you know, and obviously a couple of young ones on the bench today who have got big, big futures, hopefully, at this club,” the United boss said.
“So we just felt that at the time we came in, I thought that experience was important. And the other two boys, as I say, they’ll have a lot of games and a lot of performances in their career here because they’ve got really bright futures.
“But Harry’s came in after playing not a lot of football, really, and came into it and done ever so well. He is what he is, you know, he’s such a big presence and being there, seen there, done it as well.”
Carrick’s World Cup message about Maguire
Maguire has not been involved in any of the England squads since Thomas Tuchel took charge but Carrick has suggested that he is ‘one of the best’ defenders when he is playing like this.
“I think that [experience] helps within the group when we’ve got so many young players who are still learning. So I think he’s had a big influence with that and just that composure, as I say, to understand the moments and not be fazed by it, being a big presence there,” he continued.

“With him and Licha [Martínez] particularly at the back give us the foundation to build on. So listen, see what the future holds in terms of World Cup, but when he’s like that and the way he’s played, he’s certainly one of the best for me.”
The experienced defender would certainly love to be part of another major tournament for his country, but his priority will be to continue thriving at Old Trafford and that will give him the best chance of an England recall.
