“One of…” – Manchester United make judgement on Adam Wharton after Selhurst Park audition

Manchester United have come to a conclusion about Adam Wharton’s performance in 2-1 win against Crystal Palace as the search for midfield recruits continues.

Manchester United defeated Oliver Glazer’s Crystal Palace away from home in a re-energised 2-1 comeback thanks to two star set pieces.

Palace striker, Jean-Philippe Mateta scored first after he was brought down by Leny Yoro in the United penalty area. After his first attempt needed to be re-taken due to a double-kick, the Frenchman sent Senne Lammens the wrong way as he calmly put his side in the lead.

It took a second half comeback for Ruben Amorim’s side, beginning with an equaliser from Joshua Zirkzee who’s chest control took him to a tight angle from a Bruno Fernandes free kick. The Dutchman managed to volley his effort past former red, Dean Henderson, despite the tight angle, levelling the scoring for United.

Another smart free kick handed all three points to United, again orchestrated by Fernandes who discretely poked a quick pass into the path of Mason Mount who buried his attempt into Henderson’s near post.

Palace midfielder, Adam Wharton, has been on Man United’s radar for some time as United look to reinforce the core of their team. The club has made judgement on the Englishman’s performance as he may be on his way to Old Trafford.

United impressed by Wharton’s midfield display

According to Football Insider, former Man United chief scout, Mick Brown, revealed that the 21-year-old midfielder had a successful performance against United despite his side losing.

Brown stated, “It was certainly an opportunity for United to see him up close. He was one of the best players on the pitch, certainly the best player for Crystal Palace, and he showed again why these clubs are looking at him.”

“It was a shame that he had to come off, but they’re still adapting to playing in Europe and the difficulties of their fixture congestion and rotating the squad.”

Brown also revealed, “Wharton is high on their [Man United’s] list, as he is with a lot of clubs. That performance will have done him no harm in terms of that interest, and I have no doubt they’ll be impressed with how he fared against their midfield.”

Would Crystal Palace let Wharton leave?

The young midfielder has been a crucial factor to the Eagles’ success as they look to retain their position in European competition, so Palace are attempting to offer Wharton a new contract.

Palace are believed to have opened talks with Wharton’s representatives over a new deal as they are aware that interest around the midfielder is growing heavily.

Regardless, United are in need of midfield recruitment as Casemiro looks to be coming to the end of his contract. Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo has struggled for minutes under Amorim.

Manuel Ugarte has underwhelmed in his time at Old Trafford as the Uruguayan has been unable to establish himself as the player he was known to be at Sporting CP.

With interest also from Real Madrid and Liverpool, United may need to act fast if they want to secure pen to paper with Wharton to revolutionise Amorim’s midfield.
