Amorim’s departure has left question marks over who is next to take on the challenge, and there is one individual who is eager to be the man for the job.
Despite a disappointing draw to Leeds United on Sunday and a shocking post-match press conference, the sacking of Manchester United head coach Rúben Amorim has still come as a shock in the football world, with everyone having the same question: Who will replace the 40-year-old?
While several names have been floating around since the news broke, there is one person who is very willing to throw his hat in the ring: Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.
The Austrian has also found himself on United’s radar after his impressive work with Crystal Palace. Since joining in February of last year, Glasner has won the club two trophies: The FA Cup and the Community Shield, securing the South London side their first-ever major trophy.
The Austrian appears keen on taking the opportunity, telling Football Insider that he would “very much” welcome the task of leading the Reds. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, his departure from the club wouldn’t be completely unprecedented.
Glasner makes his intentions clear
Glasner has made it clear that becoming United’s manager is something that appeals to him greatly, even considering the turbulence that Old Trafford has faced in recent seasons.
Since his time at Palace, Glasner has been a name constantly linked with the big jobs within the Premier League; however, some may argue this is the one that seems the most realistic, with his exit from the Eagles almost inevitable, the vacancy at United seems perfect.
Glasner has quickly emerged as the favourite to replace Amorim, with links between himself and the club strengthening immensely.
Darren Fletcher has been given the immediate role of Interim manager, and while people remain hopeful that United will find a permanent figure in the dugout quickly, reports have suggested that a caretaker may be put in place to manage the club until the summer.
This would give United the ability to secure Glasner without having to pay any compensation fees for taking him from Palace in the middle of the season.
Why fans are warming to Glasner
While Glasner remains a strong favourite, other names are circling the scene. Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca and former United defender Laurent Blanc find themselves in the running for the unpredictable yet coveted position at the club.
Former England head coach Sir Gareth Southgate has also been put forward as a potential option; however, none of these candidates have the same strong links as Glasner does.
Many fans would welcome Glasner with open arms, with every side he’s led having a clear identity on and off the pitch, something that United are craving currently.
Glasner’s teams are synonymous with their high-intensity pressing, quick attacks and aggressive off-the-ball work. Having a clear-cut mission is vital for United to make progress with the constantly changing styles of play being a big issue for the Reds in recent years.
Glasner’s time at Crystal Palace and Frankfurt has also helped cement why he would be a fantastic fit for United. He was able to come into both squads and make the necessary changes efficiently to allow trophies to be won and progression to be made.
Glasner doesn’t solely rely on star power, which is incredibly crucial in terms of the current United squad, and his coaching ability will hopefully be enough to get United back to the fighting force they once were.
